2011: Lady Spikers’ Season 73 win highlights

The Lady Spikers’ virtually no-loss game season last UAAP Season 73 is one of the highlights of DLSU’s centennial.

Sporting players like Best Spiker, Server, and MVP of the season Jacqueline Alarca, veterans Steph Mercado and Cha Cruz, the Lady Spikers managed to overcome their obstacles last season.

A tournament rule infraction mired the Green-and-White Volleybelles during the Christmas break, causing the tarnish in their immaculate win-loss slate.

Though they proved to be invincible in the court, winning most matches via straight set, the road back to the title was not easy.

Nearly losing to the equally-formidable Ateneo Lady Eagles in the semis match-up, the Ramil de Jesus-mentored squad was in danger when the championship series reflected the previous year’s.

Having to contend with the same Gold-and-Black colors again, the Lady Spikers, however, did not let Season 72’s title loss strangle them down.

The Lady Spikers took revenge as they rendered the UST Tigresses, their former championship tormentor, powerless last season with another sweep during the championship series.

In addition, the Taft-based Spikers almost swept the individual awards, hoarding six out of ten special awards for the season.

Being one of only five teams that copped a championship for the University, Season 73’s Lady Spikers amazing feat will be another embedment into DLSU sports history books.
