FMC: Big men lead Green Archers in smothering Trinity Broncos

Big men Aiki Herrera and Fonzo Gotladera scattered 15 and 13 points accordingly to lead the De La Salle Green Archers’ demolition of the Trinity University of Asia Broncos, 85-51, in the ongoing 18th Fr. Martin Cup tournament at the San Beda Gym last May 13.

DLSZ standout Gabby Reyes mustered 11 points while veteran Joshua Webb, who first saw action in this game, garnered 8 baskets.

The Broncos were able to keep up with the pace during the first period, but things got sloppy for them halfway through the second quarter.

Carrying a slender four point lead in the 4:36 mark of the second quarter, the Green Archers triggered a 14-3 run to hold a 40-24 advantage in the interval. The green shirts continued their domination of the Broncos until the third quarter.

Mac Tallo pulled off a back-to-back layup exhibition in the middle of the period to put the Taft-based squad ahead by 22.

A bang-and-a-bucket play by Thomas Torres late in the third extended the Green Archers’ lead to 25.

Despite the massive advantage, the Green Archers still kept their feet on the gas. Herrera, Gotladera, and Martin Reyes combined for 15 points as Coach Gee Abanilla’s wards cruised to win number three in five outings.

Coach Abanilla lauded the effort shown by the rookies. “The rookies were given exposure. We found out what they could do. They were given the opportunity to showcase their talents and had shown flashes of brilliance.”

In this game, the rookies, who consist of Reyes, Teng, Tallo and the Torres brothers of Axel and Thomas, accumulated a total of 35 points.

As for Webb’s inclusion in this game, Abanilla explained that he wants Webb to gain the confidence in order to play better in the next few games.

Quarter scores: 17-12, 40-24, 61-36, 85-51
