UAAP: Vosotros powers Archers against Maroons

Looking to erase the stigma of the Archers’ 67-77 loss against the Ateneo Blue Eagles, the De La Salle Green Archers notched the team’s seventh win, 76-69, in a match against the UP Fighting Maroons last September 6 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Almond Vosotros came off the bench to pour in a career-high 21 points and four rebounds in a span of 20 minutes to anchor the La Salle offense. Leading Rookie of the Year candidate Jeron Teng also recorded 19 points, five rebounds and four assists while Norbert Torres tallied 13 points and five boards to supplement the production of Albay-native Vosotros.

Sobrang nagfofocus ako sa game kasi ako ‘yung parang pupuntahan ni Coach kasi wala si LA [Revilla],” said a determined Vosotros.

Meanwhile, Mike Silungan led the Maroons with 14 points, all scored in the fourth that went with two assists while reserve forward Jett Manuel tallied in 12 markers and pulled down three boards.

Hard-fought win
UP took an early 4-0 lead before Norbert Torres and the rest of the Archers started a run, which led to a 17-6 lead.

Runs from both sides resulted to a couple of lead changes in the second quarter, but La Salle stood strong as the team held a seven-point lead that was topped by Teng’s buzzer beater, leading into halftime.

Entering the second half with a 34-41 deficit, the Maroons clobbered a way back into the game with a 14-4 run that gave the team the lead at the 4:13 mark of the third.

The Maroons, however, failed to keep the lead; Vosotros and Jovet Mendoza soon catapulted a 9-2 spurt that gave the Abanilla-mentored quintet a narrow 54-50 advantage before the start of the last period. Down the stretch, the Fighting Maroons tried to make a comeback, but the Green Archers kept answering UP’s baskets to preserve the lead.

A Silungan three that trimmed DLSU’s lead to six, 72-66, with 2:34 left seemed to have ignited the Maroons, but Vosotros’ shot-clock-beating triple with 78 seconds remaining restored the Green Archers’ lead back to nine and virtually sealed DLSU’s seventh win.

Bigger challenge

With the victory, the Archers now has a hold at 4th spot with a 7-4 record, further separating the team from the National University Bulldogs that currently sits at 5th place with a 6-5 outing.

Veteran playmaker L.A. Revilla will likely return this coming Sunday. DLSU Head Coach Gee Abanilla shared, “He was feeling the court before the game. Naglaro [shooting drills] nga siyang konti pero we’ll have another check up tomorrow to see if he is cleared.”

As the Final Four brawl draws closer, La Salle is set to duel with National U this coming Sunday 4pm at the Mall of Asia Arena for the win-over-the-other rule if both teams end up with identical records at the end of the 2nd round.

“I think it’s going to be a tough game for both teams and I’m sure [NU] is really preparing hard for us, and we are going to do the same thing starting tomorrow [in training],” concluded Abanilla.

The scores:

DLSU 76 –  Vosotros 21, Teng 19, N. Torres 13, Mendoza 7, Van Opstal 6, T. Torres 4, Andrada 2, Manguera 2, Tampus 2, Tallo 0, Webb 0.

UP 69 –  Silungan 14, Manuel 12, Lopez 10, Padilla 9, Asilum 6, Soyud 4, Romero 4, Gamboa 3, Mbah 2, Montecastro 2, Hipolito 2, Ball 1.

Quarter scores: 19-14, 41-34, 54-50, 76-69
