Lady Spikers: Three sets to a 3-peat

Three is the magic number.

La Salle is just three set victories away from claiming the UAAP Season 75 Women’s Volleyball Championship. La Salle needs three set victories to prevent a deciding Game 3 this weekend. And La Salle needs three set victories to accomplish a second 3-peat in the past decade.

The ladies will attempt to immortalize themselves in the history books with a decisive Game 2 victory against the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles today at the Mall of Asia Arena. Coming off a thrilling five set victory in Game 1, La Salle will look to close out the series and claim that third straight championship.

In game 1, Ateneo handily won the first two sets of the first game and got off to a blazing start in the third set as the Blue-and-White looked destined to take the match.

The Lady Spikers, however, did not give up easily as Ara Galang, Michele Gumabao, Abi Marano and the surprising Cyd Demecillo combined to rally the Green-and-White to take the set and eventually, the match.

“Nahirapan kami dun sa first two sets at masasabi ko na talagang na-challenge yung skills namin, yung puso namin, talagang linabas talaga ni God‘yung gustong makita ng mga taoas a La Salle team,” said the two-time Best Blocker Gumabao after the first game.

The ladies from Taft Avenue took down their rivals through a more efficient play, which was absent in the first two sets. With an unwavering swagger, the Lady Spikers turned around the match and after five sets of back-and-forth volleyball, it was clear to all that Coach Ramil de Jesus’ squad would finish the season on top of the podium.

With just three sets between La Salle and the championship, expect the Lady Spikers to come out more determined than ever before.

The second game is right around the corner and by avoiding a Game 3, DLSU could secure the championship. The magic number is three.
