Rant and Rave: ‘Monsters University’

The trend of sequels has become more popular in today’s world, Pixar took a unique route with the Monsters Inc. franchise after they released Monsters University this year, a prequel to the 2001 box office hit that grossed over $500 million in theaters across the world. Prequels are often avoided by filmmakers in general because of the added burden of keeping the details of both films intact, yet provides viewers with a compelling story with an adequate build-up to one of the most beloved Pixar movies of all time.

The film kicks off with a start to endear the viewers as they discover and learn about Mike Wazowski’s early childhood, where his passionate goal to be able to study and train as a scarer in the prestigious Monsters University was solidified through a simple field trip; one that changed the course of his life then on.

As soon as Mike Wazowski steps upon the immaculate grounds of Monsters University, there is an undeniable charged feel, the setting and the energy keeps the audience at an upbeat pace; something about attending a university is so fresh and exciting and here it shows Wazowski’s naïve concept of a peaceful path towards attaining his lifelong goal of being a scarer.

Those who are avid fans of the franchise will truly appreciate the attention to detail that was applied when making this prequel. Characters from the original film make several cameos throughout MU, such as Monsters Inc. chairman Henry J. Waternoose III, Roz the clerk and the scarers, and it is a treat for nostalgic fans. If Toy Story 3 helped close the franchise’s storybook, Monsters University gives viewers an in-depth look and explanation of some quirks in the original movie and gives us a further understanding of their world.

Though the main target audience for the film is children, men and women of all ages can appreciate the film, especially with the timeless themes incorporated in the plot. Fair play, hard work, true friendship and social acceptance are among the themes of the movie and are extremely relatable to common real life problems. What’s a kiddy film without the typical obstacle where downfalls are pitched left and right? Despite a succession of blows encountered to undermine their unshakable faith and grit, obviously common school bullies (most often, jocks) are responsible for this usual school setting, the movie also dabbles upon ethics as Sulley is confronted with a looming dilemma over the choice to follow the voice of the betterment of his fellow teammates or to go on his own selfish track. Wazowski’s ardent tenacity to pursue his goal had yet proved to conquer and overcome most of his difficulties which stringed most of the events throughout the film. It is here the value of hard work and through sheer determination, which is backed up by quick wit and intelligence, one can truly be a scarer in his own unique way. The similarities of the plot with the actual life of a university student makes this movie a must-watch, especially since they were the children that the movie was originally made for.

Expect to be engrossed in a film with a purpose to keep the eyes glued on to the screen, through a spectacular display of vibrancy in color, images, and graphics. Also, there is always room for the viewers to anticipate more of their humorous antics but in an obvious and predictable manner. In terms of film prequels, Monsters University delivers, and proves to be amusing and entertaining but doesn’t demonstrate for Pixar to surge forth with more innovative and creative ideas for a film.

The smooth transition and flow of the film provides comfort and ease for audience to receive an experience peppered with numerous laughs obviously catered to kids, but it may perhaps be seen a cliché with no difference as compared to other Pixar films.

Despite the criticisms of the movie’s plot, such as a lack of complexity and the absence of “wow” moments, viewers will more often than not come away smiling from this feel-good film. Despite the pale comparisons to Pixar’s best sequels, Toy Story 2 and 3, the relative success of Monsters University is a big help in their attempt to bounce back from the lackluster performance of Cars 2. Though Pixar played it safe with this one, Monsters University still provides viewers – both young and old -with an entertaining feel good movie that is worth both your time and money.
