Green Journal: Jennifer Perkins

For the past five months, we have been following Jason Perkins’ journey from being a highly touted rookie to his inclusion as a part of the UAAP champion team through his Green Journal. Now, we get to hear it from his Mom, Jennifer Cahigas Perkins, who hails from Bolinao, Pangasinan. Mrs. Perkins flew all the way from Minnesota to see her son earn his first UAAP championship as a Green Archer. In this edition of the Green Journal, she talks about his achievements, how far he’s gone, and her big dreams for him.

Jason did really well this season but knowing him, he can still do better. I encouraged him to go here to Manila because I thought he’d have a better chance playing here, and also that he would be okay, so I really encouraged him to come here.

I moved to the US when I was 22 and Jason was born there. He’s the youngest of three siblings, having an older brother and sister. We couldn’t bring him over to the Philippines when he was young because even when he was little, he’d play sports all year long. He’d play [American] football and basketball, even traveling every summer playing AAU, the higher level of basketball in the States. Back in Minnesota, he was pretty good, even leading his high school team in scoring.

I just came home for the finals to see Jason play. I’ve been here for almost two weeks and I was supposed to leave last Wednesday but since they played today, I decided to fly out on Monday instead.

It’s really great how everyone loves Jason. It’s impressive, and I feel very honored and blessed for him, cause he’s doing good and the people love him. I guess I can proudly say he got his personality from me. Jason’s a really good kid, and he’s got a bigger heart than his body. I know he can make a big impact with the younger kids because of that. He’s got big dreams and I think he and the team will do good things in the coming years. We’ve talked about the PBA but right now, I just wanna see him graduate from college first.
