A new round, a new start. This is how the DLSU Green Archers have been so far this second round as they blew past the UP Fighting Maroons, 86-65, to move up to a first place tie with Ateneo in the standings.

Almond Vosotros finally had a good shooting performance as he made five three pointers and finished with 21 points, two rebounds, and four assists to give DLSU its second win in two outings in the second half of the season.

DLSU was down early as UP made their baskets to open the game until Norbert Torres sealed two free throws at the 8:10 mark. After a Julian Sargent three pointer, the Green Archers went on a 15-2 run which put La Salle ahead 20-15, at the end of the first.

In the second period, three pointers from Jeron Teng and Vosotros continued to put DLSU on top. However, UP kept the lead in single digits, as JR Gallarza’s 14 points helped keep UP within six points, 40-34, at the half. Vosotros and Gallarza each had three triples at the half yet DLSU shot at 42 percent as a team compared to UP, who settled for 33 percent.

UP’s Dave Moralde opened the second half by scoring five straight points, but the Green Archers answered back with baskets from Teng and N. Torres. This offensive display was followed by three pointers from Vostoros and Perkins, keeping La Salle ahead. Reyes, Juruena, and Gingerich tried to lead a UP comeback but failed to match DLSU’s intensity. In the end, a Gallarza three pointer managed to cut the lead to 15, 68-53, at the end of the third quarter.

Arnold Van Opstal and Vostoros took charge in the fourth quarter, as the former scored seven points in the period while the latter made several key passes. UP’s Mikee Reyes had five points in the quarter; however, the DLSU lead was at it’s highest at 23, 86-63, with less than a minute left in the game.

Teng had another all around game as he finished with 15 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Jason Perkins came away with a double double as he finished with 13 points, and 11 rebounds, three of which came from the offensive end. Arnold van Opstal had 12 points, and eight rebounds while Abu Tratter had seven points, making his only field goal and making five of his six attempts at the free throw line.

Meanwhile, Gallarza led UP with 18 points and four rebounds while Reyes had 14 points. Moralde had 11 points and Mark Juruena added nine points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists.

As a team, the Green Archers outrebounded UP 52-36 and had 18 assists to UP’s 16. The Fighting Maroons had 13 turnovers to DLSU’s 18 and had four steals to La Salle’s two.

Up next for the Green Archers is a game against FEU, the same team that beat them in the first round. They will play on Wednesday, August 27, at 4PM in the MOA Arena.
