Power Mac Center opens at DLSU

Earlier today, August 29, the Power Mac Center located at the Yuchengco Lobby opened its doors to the DLSU community. This is one of the many projects that the Campus Services Office has in store for University stakeholders this academic year.

Associate Vice President for Campus Services Jose Calleja says that the Power Mac Center was established to help support the technological needs of the students. Apple computers, tablets, and other computer accessories are now made more accessible through the Power Mac Center – DLSU branch.

“It’s in line with the University’s efforts to make services more responsive to the needs of the community–not just the students but also the faculty, administrators, and the staff,” former University Student Government President and current Youth Coordinator for the Campus Services Office Migi Moreno explains.

Moreno adds that the consultation process for the establishment of the center began as early as the start of former DLSU President and Chancellor Br. Ricky Laguda’s FSC term. Calleja also highlighted that his office has been consulting with different student leaders, so they can have a clearer picture of the needs of Lasallian. The insights they get from student representives help the office pinpoint the what needs should be addressed.

Moreno added that the Campus Services Office has been coming up with activities and programs that would foster a healthier campus life among University stakeholders. “The office envisions DLSU to be a world-class university wherein the lives of the students and the other members of the community would not just be encapsulated inside the classroom and in offices…we also want the students, faculty, and staff to experience a more vibrant campus life even outside those enclosed settings,” the youth coordinator elaborated.

Lasallians can expect that the newly opened Power Mac Center will not only offer Apple products and services, but it will also provide training sessions on softwares and computer use. Other programs the Campus Services Office are currently working on are the establishment of a 7-11 convenience store in the Gokongwei Building and the construction of yoga classrooms.

As an alumnus of this hallowed institution, may I request that the administration be upfront and say why they truly opened the store. “Fulfilling the needs of the students” is a huge lie. In a campus where a computer is never more than five feet away, this is incredible. If your intention really was to service the needs of the students for accessible computers, you’d open a new Cybernook (is that still what you call it?), not a Power Mac Center.

I have nothing against this move. It’s the dishonesty of the purported motive that irks me. It’s not like I don’t expect DLSU to be run like a business–it always has been and to be fair it has the world class facilities to show for it.

But cut the excrement. You did it for the money, not for the students, and not for improving education.
