DLSU bench named after former Green Archer

Last December 1, former DLSU Green Archer Tyrone Tang, who played for La Salle from 2002 to 2007, had a bench named after him as part of a program by the University to name certain tambayan spots around campus after donors in exchange for donations.
Tang’s newly named bench can be found at the ground floor of St. La Salle Hall, between the Amphitheatre and the Marian Quadrangle together with benches of other donors.

As a Green Archer, Tang’s career highlights include leading the Franz Pumaren-coached team to a UAAP championship against the UE Warriors last 2007. After his UAAP stint, Tang joined the Harbour Center Batang Pier in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) and he was later on declared the PBL Finals MVP.

Tang also competed internationally, as he was part of the Philippine team that joined the 2007 Southeast Asia Basketball Association tournament, where they came out as the first runner-up. Last 2008, Tang was drafted as the 12th overall pick of the Philippine Basketball Association. Currently, the 5’7 guard plays for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. Given his many achievements, Tang wants to give back to the Lasallian community for all the blessings he received during his years in the University.

“From my five years of stay in La Salle there are a lot of things that they have instilled in me, so in a way I want to give back to the community. In turn it’s also a good donation because it’s for a good cause,” Tang explains. His full college scholarship for being a varsity player was donated by his father to four other Lasallians and he shares that this served as an example for him to give to others as well.

The donations collected from the naming of the benches or tables will be used to fund scholarships, particularly the University’s Vaugirard Scholarship Program. The scholarship covers tuition and miscellaneous fees and even allots a P10,000 monthly allowance to each scholar. The scholarship is awarded to 50 students from Philippine public high schools every academic year.  Tang added that he may opt to donate more money apart from his current donation.

Tang donated over P150,000 to La Salle’s cause, which would span and give him naming rights for 10 to 15 years. Currently, several benches and tables around campus have already been named, which show how Lasallian alumni are thankful to their alma mater.
