UAAP: Lady Batters outlast UE, Green Batters fall to Ateneo

The DLSU Lady Batters shocked the undefeated UE Red Warriors with a lopsided 5-1 win at the Rizal Memorial Stadium last February 8. Meanwhile, the DLSU Green Batters were not as lucky as they were beaten by the ADMU Blue Eagles with a score of 4-1.

Surging forward

The DLSU squad looked to score early on during the first inning. Joy Son looked composed as she managed to hit second base on the first play. Following her was fellow Lady Batter Vanessa Borbon who hit the ball towards UE’s left fielder, allowing Son and Borbon to take home plate. This gave DLSU the 2-0 advantage in the early stages of the match.

After a scoreless second and third inning for both teams, the Lady Warriors looked to make adjustments coming into the offense. Mary Rose Panes provided the spark for her team as she was able to score their only run, cutting the DLSU lead to just one.

However, the Taft-based squad’s defense was just too much to handle for UE. Jamica Arribas of the Lady Batters managed to give the offense several problems. From there on, it was DLSU dictating the pace of the game with Marivic Muñoz and Son complementing each other to score two more runs making it a 4-1 advantage.

Ended streak

The Green Batters ended the first half of UAAP Season 77 with a loss to the ADMU Blue Eagles last Sunday, February 8, at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium. The final score was 4-1 and it gives DLSU a 3-2 record after five games.

The Green Batters opened the scoring with a well-placed hit by Carlos Laurel driving in Franco Hashimoto via an RBI (Runs Batted In) Double to give DLSU an early lead during the third inning. Laurel, however, was tagged out at second.

Things went south at the top of the sixth inning, when two Ateneo runners crossed home plate to take the lead from La Salle, 2-1. It did not stop there as the Blue Eagles’ Matt Laurel, with a runner on base, crushed a ball for a two-run home run, increasing their lead to three. Throughout the remaining innings, the Green Batters were no longer able to plate anymore runs.

As they finished the first round, coach Joseph Orillana shared his expectations for the upcoming second half, “Siguro [sa] second round namin, makaka-adjust na sila. Since marami kaming rookies ngayon, mas may idea na sila kung anong talagang laban [sa] UAAP so I think magma-mature na sila [in their future matches].”

The Lady Batters will face last year’s champion, the AdU Lady Falcons, on Saturday, February 14, at 9 am in the Rizal Memorial Stadium. On the other hand, the Green Batters will start anew as they enter the second half of the season on Thursday.
