How do Lasallians perceive the USG General Elections?

The annual University Student Government (USG) General Elections (GE) are upon De La Salle University (DLSU) once again. Aspiring student government officers are jostling for spots in the USG and a chance to serve the student body. However, these candidates, no matter how influential they may be, compose just a small portion of the student body.

In line with this,  The LaSallian made a quick survey around De La Salle University to find out what came to mind when people were asked about the USG GE.

“BS” True! Me too. I don’t want to vote for anyone kasi wala namang kwenta. walang nangyayari and all they do is announce things. i didn’t vote for announcements. I voted for PLATFORMS that was forgotten when they recieved the position/popularity they were aiming for. I know a lot of good leaders who would do well for positions but won’t run kasi all about stupid POPULARITY. di naman pinapansin UNDERDOGS e. di kasi sila tinatry ng iba kasi nga INEXPERIENCE. why can’t we try new people? baka mamaya sila pa yung makakapagbigay ng service that we all need.

I think you’re delusional.
Announcements are part of their job. Fine it’s not in their platforms, but the unit as a whole (not the elected mismo) has the task to ensure the students are properly informed.

These platforms, I believe are stretched throughout the academic year. Baka naman kasi dahil iniisip mong walang kwenta yung USG, di mo na napapansin na natutupad na yung plataporma.

And kuya, ano connection ng pagiging BS ng USG sa pinagsasabi mong underdogs?

well in fairness the parties do have what is known as bad marketing thats why no one really takes them seriously

Why don’t we remove everything that the Student Council and the USG ever made for the past 30 years? Why don’t we start with that? – To know how useless the USG really is, that’s what the majority believes right? haha

Nagiging ‘popularity contest’ na lang talaga ang GE. Nagiging “Omg. I’ll vote for her `cause she’s my friend!!” (or so you think) imbis na “Omg. I’ll vote for her because I believe that she will properly represent the student body to the best of her abilities.”

On the other hand, naniniwala naman ako sa mga platforms ng mga kandidato/political parties. Hindi naman laging ’empty promises’.

Well in general Filipinos have this culture of having “hiya” which kind of carries over even to these sort of things. Havent you heard some people say, “kaibigan ko siya eh, nakakahiya kapag di ko siya binoto”

I agree… ever since college days ko sa DLSU, di naman lahat ng sinasabi nila nangyayari… or event he effort to do so…its just gonna be part of their resume… thats all thats in to it.

The USG intends to replicate the Philippine government system, which we all know is pretty much the most inefficient government in the world.

Lets face it… its just an event na si ko alam kung bakit practiced pa… the only beneficiary of this are the candidates, part ng resume nila… pero from what I hear, since the last time I’ve been at DLSU, nothing much has changed na USG-initiated… puro short term goal, or empty nothings…

The USG GE is for popularity purposes only. It is no different from our government. Very good in speaking, very influential but not so good in execution. I know that at the back of their minds, they only want power and fame. Leadership is not supposed to be that way. We vote because we want leaders that will SERVE us and are ready to risk their everything for the sake of the betterment of their constituents (us).

There are only a few people who have the guts to run in position. They themselves are leaders. Not conceited people aiming for popularity. They had the guts to run thinking they will be judged according to the diverse possibilities of perception (including your judgement) the student body will be throwing at them.

The candidates platforms are to give you what they have envisioned – for YOU and the entire student body. So if you wait for something to happen, sit down and complain about how these systems work, why don’t you shut up, put yourself in their shoes – and prove yourself that you too, can be an effective leader.

I agree Student Leader, running for an elected position in an emotional roller-coaster, candidates wouldn’t run unless they know what is going to be expected to be thrown at them. And, it is easy to complain about promises being late or not being fulfilled than actually trying to implement the promises.
