Spikers’ Turf: Green Spikers overthrow Patriots in straight sets

Following their win against the Arellano University Chiefs, the DLSU Green Spikers picked things up from where they left off and managed to defeat the DLSU-Dasmariñas Patriots in straight sets, 25-17, 25-18, 25-22, yesterday afternoon at the San Juan Arena. With the victory, the Green Spikers move to a 2-1 record with their second consecutive game after dropping their first match to UAAP champion Ateneo.

It was Cris Dumago who provided the firepower for the Taft-based squad, scoring 12 points off spikes and a single block. However, it was Arjay Onia’s consistency that was crucial to the win as he was named Player of the Game after chipping in 12 points on 10 attacks, one block, and a service ace.

The Patriots found themselves struggling during the first set against the surging attacks of the Green Spikers. After leading 13-9 early on, DLSU managed to establish a scoring barrage that the Patriots could not answer on the defensive end. In the end, La Salle held DLSU-D to only 17 points in the first set.

The second set began with the Green Spikers and the Patriots trading points, but La Salle eventually broke away with a 6-4 run that gave them a 9-6 lead. The two teams continued scoring points with DLSU not giving DLSU-D a chance to trim the deficit, heading into the second set’s second technical timeout with a 16-13 advantage. The Green Spikers then went on a 6-3 run to stretch their lead to six, 22-16. Both teams continued to trade points until DLSU emerged as the victors of the second set, 25-18.

In the third set, DLSU once again imposed their dominance on the court, racing to an early 4-1 lead. However, DLSU-D made offensive and defensive efforts to stay within arm’s reach. Despite their efforts, DLSU could not break away from the feisty Patriots, who stayed within two points, 17-15. After battling out and making necessary adjustments, the Green Spikers managed to seal the third and final set of the match, 25-22.

DLSU will look to continue their winning streak as they go head to head with another sister school, DLSU-CSB, on Monday, August 3, at 1pm in the San Juan Arena.
