UAAP: Lady Spikers seek redemption against Adamson

Reeling from a shocking loss in last Wednesday’s game, the DLSU Lady Spikers are looking to redeem themselves and get back on the winning track when they take on the Adamson Lady Falcons this Saturday, 2 pm, at the FilOil Arena in San Juan.

Falling short

Last Wednesday, La Salle suffered their first defeat of the season courtesy of the NU Lady Bulldogs, who beat them in four sets, 25-16, 26-24, 14-25, 25-23. Jaja Santiago, Myla Pablo, and Jorelle Singh led the NU attack by combining for 48 points in the upset victory. The Lady Bulldogs claimed the first two sets before finally escaping with the win after they clinched a tightly contested fourth set.

Majoy Baron put on a show by leading all players with 19 points. However, it wasn’t enough to propel the Taft-based squad to the coveted victory on Ash Wednesday.

The Lady Falcons, meanwhile, also saw themselves lose to the Lady Bulldogs in their last match, 17-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20. Similar to the Lady Spikers’ match with NU, it was also the trio of Santiago, Pablo, and Singh that led Adamson to their downfall, with Santiago leading the way with 20 points.

Adamson’s Jessica Galanza spearheaded her team with 17 points, while May Roque added 12 points in a game that they let slip away despite winning the first set.

Previous season encounters

The Lady Spikers faced Adamson in their season-opening game last year, securing their first win in four-sets, 25-23, 24-26, 25-14, 25-17. DLSU took the first set after completing a late rally to steal the momentum early on. However, AdU took the second set, taking advantage of La Salle’s errors. Later on, the Lady Spikers came alive in the last two sets, securing both to end the match.

Ara Galang led the charge for La Salle with 27 points off 22 attacks and 5 blocks followed by Camille Cruz , who had 10 points. Meanwhile, for AdU, Amanda Villanueva, Mylene Paat, and Galanza led the offense with 16, 15, and 13 points, respectively.

Similarly, their second round face-off in Season 77 saw the Lady Spikers triumph over the Lady Falcons in straight sets, 25-13, 25-15, 25-17, a win that boosted La Salle’s standing to 12-1. Unlike their first match against Adamson, they took all sets after gaining an early advantage in each set.

Once again, it was Galang who spearheaded the Lady Spikers, scoring 20 points on 18 attacks and 10 digs. Desiree Cheng also chipped in 13 points of her own. On the other hand, the Lady Falcons were once more led by Paat’s 11 points.

Michele Gumabao, who played for DLSU from 2010 until 2013, now serves as an assistant coach for the Lady Falcons. The former Lady Spiker team captain will be facing La Salle for the first time since her appointment this season.

Taking into account the most recent games of DLSU and AdU, this Saturday’s match between the two will be an exciting one as both teams will be eager to rise up in the standings and recover from their early losses.
