The Green Spikers lost their fourth straight match in UAAP Season 78 after falling to the FEU Tamaraws in four sets, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-19, earlier today at the San Juan Arena. With the loss, they now carry a 1-5 win-loss record.

La Salle was leading for most of the first set but a 3-1 FEU run closed the gap. Nearing the end of the set, the two teams found themselves in a close match as they tried to get the better of each other. It was the Green Spikers who eventually came out as victors of the first set after the Tamaraws incurred an error, ending the set at 25-22.

Unlike in the first set, the Tamaraws immediately took the lead after going on a 4-2 run that was built on their solid floor defense. Midway through the set, Onia started scoring with his down-the-line spikes, which trimmed FEU’s lead to a single point. However, a 7-3 run by the Tamaraws ended the set in their favor, 25-20.

Similar to the previous set, FEU started aggressively in the third one. But despite gaining points from successful attacks, their errors allowed La Salle to remain close. The set progressed with the two teams trading points with one another. At 21-14, La Salle started catching up with the help of Onia and Levin Dimayuga, both of whom scored two consecutive points for every point of FEU. However, before they could tie the scores, Barrica hit an open spike to seal the set at 25-23, in favor of FEU.

The fourth set’s scoring started with an open spike by Barrica to which Green Spikers John David Delos Reyes and Woo answered with quick plays, putting the score at 2-1. The Tamaraws, however, made a 6-1 run to give themselves the lead at 7-3. DLSU tried to cut the lead but FEU didn’t let them come close. Showing off well-coordinated plays courtesy of Dolor and Barrica, the Tamaraws further widened their lead to seven, 18-11. An uncontested quick spike from John Paul Bugaoan ended the set and the match with a score of 25-19, in favor of FEU.

In terms of team statistics, the Tamaraws outperformed La Salle with 56 attacks, nine blocks, and six aces. On the other hand, the Green Spikers made 49 attacks and eight blocks. DLSU incurred 26 unforced errors as opposed to FEU’s 30.

The Green Spikers will close the first round of the tournament against the UST Growling Tigers, whom they will be facing this Wednesday, March 2, at 8 am, still in the same venue.
