UAAP: Lady Spikers aim for fifth straight win against struggling UE

With the conclusion of the Holy Week festivities, the DLSU Lady Spikers will resume action in the UAAP Season 78 Women’s Volleyball Tournament later today when they take on the UE Lady Warriors at 2 pm in the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Taft-based squad are aiming to wrestle the top spot from the ADMU Lady Eagles, who are currently tied with DLSU at 9-2. The Lady Spikers have a good chance of doing just that against the Lady Warriors, who are currently at the bottom of the standings and have yet to notch a single victory this season.

Contrasting results

The Lady Spikers dominated the Adamson Lady Falcons last March 20, winning in straight sets, 25-13, 25-11, 25-18. Kim Dy led all scorers with 11 points on four aces, while Ara Galang and Kim Fajardo chipped in 10 points each for La Salle. Meanwhile, May Roque led Adamson with five points, all of which came from spikes.

On the other hand, the Lady Warriors found themselves on the losing end after dropping their match against the UP Lady Maroons in straight sets, 25-23, 25-22, 25-14. Isa Molde and Marian Buitre spearheaded the Lady Maroons, scoring 12 points each in the victory. On the other side, Shaya Adorador scored 13 points on nine attacks, two blocks, and two aces to lead UE in a losing effort.

One-sided first round clash

During their first round meeting, La Salle won against UE in three sets, 25-10, 25-13, 25-21. It was Mika Reyes who led DLSU, as she scored 10 points from nine attacks and one block. Meanwhile, Adorador also scored 10 points for her team.

La Salle took control of the first and second set of the match, never letting UE come close to them for most of the game. In the third set, DLSU remained ahead once again but a late rally from the Lady Warriors almost led to a breakpoint. It was the Lady Spikers, however, who eventually won the set and match.

Both teams enter this match with different agendas yet a victory would definitely boost their confidence. For the Lady Spikers, a victory would help them inch closer to the twice-to-beat advantage that would be crucial in the Final Four. The Lady Warriors, on the other hand, will be seeking a victory that will end their prolonged drought as the season winds down.
