LA elects leaders anew in first session

The University Student Government (USG) Legislative Assembly (LA) held its first session for this academic year last September 14 at A702. During the session, this year’s Chief Legislator, Majority Floor Leader, and Minority Floor Leader were elected.

The session adjourned with Janine Angelo (IV, BS-IT) elected as the new Chief Legislator for the current academic year, Isaac Ngo (III, BSE-ENG) as the Majority Floor Leader, and Hiraya Mendez (IV, AEI-FIN) as Minority Floor Leader. All three won unanimously.

Angelo emphasized transparency and maximization of USG communication lines in her platform. Among her proposals include expanding and maximizing communication lines, further mobilizing the USG’s social media accounts, posting the weekly agendas of the LA to keep students informed, starting live tweets during LA sessions, passing resolutions on a more timely basis, and releasing the minutes of LA sessions immediately.

The LA also formalized memberships to both Majority and Minority Floors in accordance with the USG Constitution. Santugon sa Tawag ng Panahon comprise the Majority Floor with 12 LA representatives while Alyansang Tapat na Lasallista compose the Minority Floor with nine LA representatives.

 

Other agenda

Mendez and the Minority Floor proposed a motion to pass a resolution calling for a manifesto on national issues shortly after the elections.

After discussion from both sides and a consolidated agreement between the Chief Legislator and the floor leaders, the motion did not push through but the Minority Floor was allowed to discuss the outline of their resolution, which tackles issues such as the Davao blast and former President Ferdinand Marcos’ burial at the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani.

The LA will convene again on September 16.
