UAAP: Green, Lady Paddlers open second round on a positive note

Despite typhoon Karen looming, DLSU’s table tennis teams came out with even better performances as compared to last weekend in the second round of the UAAP Season 79 Table Tennis Tournament, which happened last Saturday at the Blue Eagle Gym. The DLSU Lady Paddlers continued their unbeaten run while the Green Paddlers concluded the day with two wins and two losses.

Lady Paddlers dominate

For their first matchup in the second round, the Lady Paddlers were slated to face the UST Growling Tigresses. Unlike their first round match, which ended in five grueling games, La Salle swept its rivals in three sets. Team captain Jamaica Sy and Emy Dael beat their opponents with identical 3-1 scores, while the duo of Co and Carreon needed all five games to defeat Parba and Darlucio and complete the sweep.

Against the AdU Lady Falcons, Dael had her way over Pangatijon, sweeping her opponent to give La Salle a 1-0 series lead. Donna Gamilla looked to pit DLSU on the brink of a series win, but she couldn’t complete her rally from a two-game deficit, falling to AdU’s Ricafort, 3-2. With the series tied at 1-1, the duo of Co and Bernaldez, as well as Sy, swept their opponents to keep the Lady Paddlers perfect so far this season.

In the afternoon, the Lady Paddlers swept the UP Lady Maroons, 3-0, and defeated the NU Lady Bulldos, 3-1. As a result, La Salle remains undefeated in the women’s division of the table tennis tournament with an 11-0 overall win-loss standing.

Green Paddlers split morning matches

The Green Paddlers got off to a positive start after sweeping the ADMU Blue Eagles in three quick games. Ruiz, Cabrido, and the duo of Nones and Eder did not give up a single game to their archrivals. NU proved to be a tougher matchup for them as Ocon and Ruiz were swept in the first two singles games. The duo of Nones and Eder looked to start a rally but in the end, they could not overcome NU’s Carrasco and Ramirez.

The Green Paddlers also split their afternoon games versus the AdU Soaring Falcons and the UST Growling Tigers. They managed to sweep AdU, 3-0, but were defeated by UST with a 3-1 scoreline. La Salle concluded the first day of the second round in the men’s division with an overall record of five wins and six losses.

With the cancellation of today’s UAAP games due to typhoon Karen, the DLSU Paddlers will resume action tomorrow, October 17, at 8 am at the Blue Eagle Gym.
