UAAP: Lady Archers dispatch Growling Tigresses

An 18-point effort by Snow Penaranda led the DLSU Lady Archers to a close-fought 72-69 victory over the UST Growling Tigresses last Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. To add to her scoring efforts, Penaranda also finished with eight rebounds and three assists, but committed seven turnovers. Kat Nunez finished as the second top scorer for La Salle with 12 points and four assists off the bench. Marga Dagdagan had 11 points as she went on to convert three of five three-point field goals. Joahanna Arciga rounded out the double digit scorers for the Green-and-White as she finished with 10 points and four rebounds.

In their losing effort, Shanda Anies led the team from Espana as she logged in a little over 33 minutes in the game and notched 18 points on 50 percent field goal shooting. Misaela Larosa and Cancdice Magdaluyo rounded out the double digit scorers for UST with 11 points each. The prior went on to finish with a double-double as she also grabbed 11 rebounds.

Ann Gandalla and Sofia Felisarta both finished with identical stat lines with nine points and 10 rebounds each. Both Thomasians were each a point shy from notching a double-double.

The Lasallians’ defense proved to be crucial once again as DLSU translated 31 UST turnovers into 26 points. The Lady Archers managed to handle the basketball better than the Thomasians as they committed only 16 turnovers. UST only managed to come up with 11 points from the errors of the Lady Archers.

First half

Penaranda made an impact early on as she managed to score seven points in the first quarter alone. Larosa looked to counter Penaranda’s effort as she finished with six points of her own early on for UST. Both players were the only members of their respective teams to convert multiple baskets as the Green-and-White took a 17-12 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.

Both teams canceled out each others efforts in the second period, each scoring 15 points. After the first half buzzer, La Salle continued to lead by five, 32-27.

Second half 

After the halfitme break, Nunez and Dagdagan set the tone for the Lady Archers as they combined for 11 points in the third quarter alone. Felisarta and Anies managed to replicate the efforts of the two Lasallians as they also combined for 11 points of their own. The game proved to be a close one as it had four deadlocks and five lead changes. After three quarters, La Salle stretched its lead over UST to seven, 54-47.

The Growling Tigresses sought to make a comeback, but only managed to outscore the Green-and-White by four in the final period of the game, 22-18, led by Anies and Gandalla. UST managed to outscore La Salle in the post, 40-32. Although the Growling Tigresses managed to impose their presence in the inside, they were outscored by the Lady Archers on the perimeter by 15, 33-18.

With the result, La Salle remains in second place with an 8-1 win-loss standing in the women’s division of the UAAP Season 79 Basketball Tournament. Up next for the Lady Archers will be the FEU Lady Tamaraws on Saturday, October 22, at 8 am at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
