Green Journal: Ben Mbala v.8

Much has happened to Ben Mbala after undergoing an extra year of residency and sitting on the sidelines for three years. From watching the Green Archers miss out on last year’s Final Four bus, he has led the team all the way back to the top step of the podium. In his final version of the Green Journal, the 6’7” center out of Cameroon shares his thoughts on winning the UAAP Season 79 Men’s Basketball Championship.

From the sidelines to winning the Most Valuable Player Award

I’d just say this is sweet. Trust me. Before the game I sat down and I had to think about all those three years being out, not being able to play or help the team. It felt like a click for me. Looking at everything I’ve been through before this season. I was like, “Don’t mess up today. Just finish it right now.”

On wanting to beat the ADMU Blue Eagles

I told my teammates to remember everything we went through this entire season. Remember the only team who beat us in the second round. Just kill them off and let’s show them that we’re still the best team.

They took something from us, like coach [Ayo] said. We wanted a special season [to finish undefeated]. We wanted to do that, but they took that away from us. Winning was like payback time for us. They also played a great game today. I have to [take] my hat off to them because they really came out strong.

Celebrating the championship

I don’t know. I have no idea [how we’re going to celebrate]. I’ll probably just have dinner. My team will decide, but whatever they’ll be doing, I’ll be with them because we’ve been through this together. We need to celebrate together. Also, my mom wasn’t here to watch right now but hopefully she’ll be here next year.

Thank you very much to the Lasallian Community and our fans for the support! I also wanna say Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Everyone stay safe and see you next season.
