UAAP: Lady Woodpushers settle for second, Green Woodpushers end Season 79 in fifth

The DLSU Lady Woodpushers concluded the final weekend of the UAAP Season 79 Chess Tournament with a win over the UE Lady Warriors and a draw with eventual champions, the FEU Lady Tamaraws last April 1 and 2. As a result, they concluded their campaign in second place. Their male counterparts on the other hand, concluded their season in fifth after bowing to the FEU Tamaraws and AdU Soaring Falcons.

Round 13: Lady Woodpushers remain in title hunt, Green Woodpushers fall to FEU

The Lady Woodpushers kept their title hopes alive at the end of round 13 with a 3-1 win over the Lady Warriors. La Salle’s Bernadette Galas defeated Lady Warrior Vilamor Nebato, 1-0, as fellow Lasallians Marie San Diego and Joy Acedo also followed up with wins over Virgenie Ruaya and Crystal Werba, respectively. Christhina Medenilla took home UE’s lone win of the day over Mira Mirano.

On the other hand, the DLSU Green Woodpushers took a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Tamaraws. Only Christian Nanola earned a victory for the Green-and-White at the expense of FEU’s Jose Castro. Tamaraws Paul Evangelista and Rhenzi Sevillano sealed wins over La Salle’s Jeazzir Surposa and Gio Mejia. Furthermore, DLSU’s Denzel Amar also bowed to Ferdinand Aviles.

Round 14: Lady Woodpushers take second, Green Woodpushers drop season finale

Round 14 served as a fitting ending for the Lady Woodpushers as they faced FEU in what was virtually a championship match. In order to win the title, La Salle needed to secure a win.

In the end, the Lady Woodpushers settled for a 2-2 draw, a result that handed the title to the Lady Tamaraws. It was a evenly fought match as all four matchups concluded in a draw with both teams concluding the season with 44.5 points each. DLSU would finish the season with 11 wins and three draws, while FEU concluded with 12 wins and two draws. UE wrapped up the podium with 27.5 points.

The Green Woodpushers could not end their season on a high note after suffering a 3-1 loss to the AdU Soaring Falcons in Round 14. Surposa and Mejia were able to salvage draws against AdU’s Christian Huavas and Mark Labog. Unfortunately, Nanola and Amar suffered losses to Jayson Tapia and Godfrey Villamor, respectively.

With the result, the Green Woodpushers ended Season 79 in fifth place with five wins, two draws, and seven losses. They accumulated a total of 26 points while the champions, the NU Bulldogs, finished with 44. The runner-up, FEU, finished with 39.

Season awards

In the women’s division, GM Janelle Mae Frayna was named the MVP (Most Valuable Player), while no Rookie of the Year award was handed out. Galas and San Diego clinched silver in Board 1 and Board 2, respectively. Team captain Acedo, Mirano, and Ella Moulic won the gold medals in Boards 3, 5, and 6, respectively.

NU’s Paulo Bersamina was named the men’s division MVP for Season 79, while ADMU’s Gavin Ona won Rookie of the Year honors. Nanola and Amar won silver and bronze medals, respectively, for their efforts on Boards 4 and 5.
