Word on the street: Dream tournaments and venues

Throughout the second semester of UAAP Season 79, a number of Lasallian athletes gave their thoughts about the different competitions and venues they aspire to compete in. Lady Spiker Tin Tiamzon, DLSU Football’s Rigo Joseph, Green Batter Ignacio Escaño, and Green Jin Mitchell Agapito share their answers with The LaSallian.

My dream venue would be anywhere, a different country, whoever hosts the Olympics in the future. If the Philippines [National Volleyball Team] ever gets to that level, I wanna go to that dream venue.  I [also] wanna play here in the Philippines. If we ever get to host another international [volleyball] competition, I hope I’ll be part of that team.

I have to admit I don’t watch football as much as I do basketball, but I really appreciate the game. My first ever football jersey was a Liverpool [Football Club] jersey. Their sponsor was Carlsberg. My favorite player is Fernando Torres. He wasn’t good in his Chelsea days, but Liverpool days, wow. Steven Gerrard also, a leader of men. Someone who’s the face of Liverpool.

They’re not performing all too well now, but I’d say Anfield [Stadium]. It’s like the whole energy, the whole “You’ll Never Walk Alone” slogan basically shows the support that fans have. The aura of the whole stadium. It kinda seems like it gives a family vibe. It [Liverpool’s slogan] speaks for itself, you’ll never walk alone.

You have not only your whole team behind you, but the 12th man. That would be a really good place to play in although they [Liverpool] are not performing too well [right now]. They’ve been there once, they can do it again.

In basketball [since I also play at the recreational level in the offseason], I’m thinking [about] Madison Square Garden. Also all the Jeremy Lin [Linsanity] got me into that. You see celebrities, the stadium’s really nice, New York. It might be a bit too cold, but that’s where everything is.

As a kid, I’ve always wanted to compete at this tournament in the United States called [the] Maui Open that is held in Hawaii. It’s not really a big tournament, but it would be nice to fight near the beach then relax there after an earned victory.

I’ve always dreamed of playing baseball in the [United] States because as an athlete, naturally, I’m a competitor and I believe that the States really has the best brand of competition for our sport so it’s always been a dream of mine to see how [good] I’d be [if I were] able to compete against those guys.
