Several cases in USG Judiciary, COMELEC cause delays in release of 2017 USG GE results

Last July 21, Alyansang Tapat sa Lasallista’s legal counsel filed with the University Student Government (USG) Judiciary an election-related case pertaining to Santugon paraphernalia resembling the USG Legislative Assembly’s resolutions, as well as an impeachment case against incumbent EXCEL2018 Batch Vice President Steven Whang. Meanwhile, the DLSU Commission on Elections is also currently handling alleged cases on electioneering and voter harassment.

According to Chief Magistrate Frances Lim, the COMELEC “cannot announce the winners of the elections yet until all cases have been resolved.” She adds, “Under the Rules of Court, cases are only good for three weeks, longer than that and they get dismissed, so there’s a possibility of settling everything through email exchanges.”

As of press time, no rescheduling has been officially announced regarding the Judiciary’s pre-trial and hearing on the paraphernalia and impeachment case. The pre-trial and hearing was originally scheduled for July 28, but due to the suspension of classes, was moved until further notice.
