Word on the street: Athletes’ go-to Christmas Eve meal

As Christmas draws closer, The LaSallian caught up with some athletes who came and conquered in the first semester of Season 80, while also interviewing some of the upcoming athletes who will try to bring the General Championship back to Taft in the second semester of the UAAP. Green Archer Prince Rivero, Animo Squad Dancer Kengy Montallana, Lady Paddler Denise Cai, Green Tanker Neil Puyo, and Green Booter Martin Alegre share their go-to meal every Christmas Eve.

“Whatever my mom cooks for Christmas, I’m good, because minsan lang siya mag-visit sa amin and every time she visits, she cooks for us. Kapag Christmas, madalas niya linuluto shrimps, crabs, crispy pata, mga ganon. Pero out of all those, sinigang.”

(Whatever my mom cooks for Christmas, I’m good, because she rarely visits us and every time she visits, she cooks for us. During Christmas, she often cooks shrimps, crabs, deep fried pig, etc. But out of all those, tamarind stew.)

Martin Alegre, Green Booter

“My favorite Christmas Eve meal is Christmas ham because I can have it for all meals—breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a midnight snack. At the same time, it is good with both bread and rice, and Queso de bola.”

Kengy Montallana, Animo Squad Dancer

“Carbonara ng mom ko na maraming cheese and bacon kasi I really love cheese and somehow parang iba yung carbonara ng mom ko, parang kapag ibang carbonara, iba pa din yung lasa. Parang every year yun yung hinahanap ng family namin.”

(My mom’s carbonara with lots of cheese and bacon, because I really love cheese, and somehow it’s like my mom’s carbonara is different. If it’s other people’s carbonara, it has a different taste. Every year, that is what my family looks forward to.)

Denise Cai, Lady Paddler

“It may include shabu-shabu, lutong bahay, and cake. This is cause Christmas is near my birthday so we usually celebrate them at the same time. We only eat shabu-shabu during special days which includes Christmas, and I feel happy and warm to spend this day with my family.”

Neil Puyo, Green Tanker

Yung food ng mom and dad ko, mostly yung sopas and ref cake, pang Noche Buena. Dalawa yung favorite ko kasi yung isa gawa ng dad ko, yung sopas and yung mom ko yung ref cake. Out of everything, yun yung pinakamasarap na sopas sa iba.

(My mom and dad’s food, mostly the sopas and ref cake, the one for Christmas Eve. I have two favorites, one is made by my dad, the sopas, and the ref cake by my mom. Out of everything, the sopas really stands out.)
