UAAP: Lady Spikers cruise past UE in straight sets

In a battle between two teams currently seated on opposite ends of the spectrum, DLSU proved why it was the league-leading team with a convincing win over the UE Lady Warriors. After a grueling five-set match in their previous game against FEU, the Lady Spikers dominated UE in straight sets, 25-8, 25-14, 25-12. La Salle improves its win-loss card with nine wins and two losses.

Majoy Baron top scored for the Green-and-White with 13 points on ten spikes and three blocks. Kim Dy also added 11 points in the winning effort. Conversely, Shaya Aborador led all Lady Warriors with five spikes.

Dominating start

In the opening set, the Lady Spikers quickly grabbed an early five-point lead coming into the first technical timeout. Errors from Judith Abil on offense gave away easy points for the team from Taft while La Salle’s floor defense also prevented the spikers of UE from making successful plays headed by libero Dawn Macandili, with 19 digs. DLSU led by as much as 17 in the set, securing the first frame in convincing fashion, 25-8.

The succeeding set replicated the first set results as the Lasallians continued to play aggressively. The offense of the Green-and-White was clicking on all cylinders. Dy and Baron displayed their veteran prowess through a barrage of consecutive attacks, resulting to another five-point lead early in the set. As for the Lady Warriors, errors continued to inflict self-damage. Finally, a service error from Seth Rodriguez gave DLSU a 2-0 set lead.

Finishing strong

The Lady Spikers easily showed why they were the defending champions as Baron led the team to a 9-0 run at the beginning of the set. The offense and defense of the Green-and-White was spot on, making sure to close the window of opportunity to score for the Lady Warriors. UE only scored its two points after Michelle Cobb and Des Cheng both made a service error.

After coach Ramil de Jesus decided to bring in his players from the bench, Rodriguez and Aborador were able to block an attack from the Lasallians and made their first attack points of the set, respectively.

Nonetheless, with the relentless service aces of Cheng and a dump by Baron after UE over received the ball, the Green-and-White finished the match with a straight set win to improve its win-loss record and keep the Lady Warriors at the tail end of the standings.

The Lady Spikers will try to continue its winning ways against the UST Golden Tigresses at the same venue two weeks from now on April 8, Sunday, at 4 pm.
