General Championship: Evaluating UAAP Season 74

The Basketball championship, highly-anticipated and hyped-up, is just a small trophy when compared to the UAAP General Championship (GC), which the University of Santo Tomas has monopolized for more than a decade already.

La Salle in its last three seasons, however, has seen itself inch away from its first GC title; DLSU has always been left stymied in bridesmaid glory.

The gap for the GC points was 50 during Season 72.

Unfailing top-tier regulars

The DLSU Tankers has been leading DLSU’s GC bid. The Lady Tankers have been consistent in pouring 10 points as 3rd placers since the 72nd season.

The men’s team has set a better record. The 72nd season showcased popular athlete-model Enchong Dee’s reign in taking the crown. Despite failing to capitalize in Season 73 due to Dee’s absence, the University found a promising recruit embodied by Johansen Aguilar. Aguilar’s record-breaking performance nabbed him seven gold medals, mimicking Dee’s last UAAP season.

The Lady Spikers has also been winning; the team had recently aced a back-to-back championship bid and a number of individual awards awareded to Abi Maraño, Cha Cruz, Victonara Galang and Mika Esperanza.

The Lady Woodpushers has followed suit. Coming from a bridesmaid ending in season 72, the team has held the finals crown in the recent two skirmishes.

The DLSU Jins has also been a consistent cash cow for points in the GC tally. The Green Jins has not settled below second since Season 72. Meanwhile, their lady counterparts have been steady at 3rd place, but the latest season results hoisted them up to bridesmaid finish.

New Hope

A number of teams have also shown progress.

The Green Tennisters, from a mere 5th place finish in the end of Season 72, has turned and dominated the UAAP tennis scene by Season 74 as champions behind mastermind Roland Kraut.

Former Season 72 champion Lady Booters has been looking to go all the way to the top; the team ascended to being a runner up in the last season.

Slowly but surely

Some DLSU teams, however, have shown a consistent albeit slow rise in ranks.

In the stage of athletics, the DLSU Tracksters is set to create a comeback since the team’s static skirmishes for the glorious top spot.

The Male Judo team, despite ending at 4th spot during Season 72 steadily rose in ranking, managing to settle at 2nd by Season 74.
