Lady Spikers sweeps Lady Tams, climbs to second place

The De La Salle University Lady Spikers followed up the team’s impressive show against Adamson University over the weekend by knocking off veteran, the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws with a three-setter, 25-19, 25-16, and 25-16 in the 75th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the San Juan Arena last December 13.

The Taft-based squad utilized the team’s height advantage to deal a heavy blow to the struggling FEU squad. Armed with Season 74 Best Blocker Michele Gumabao, reigning MVP Abigail P. Maraño, and sophomore Mika Reyes, La Salle has one of the taller and more athletic players in the league.

In the crucial third set, the Lady Tamaraws started attacking aggressively, but unexpected mental lapses and a series of reception errors made it difficult for the Lady Tamaraws to stage a comeback. The combined effort of veterans Rosemarie Vargas, Gyzelle Sy, Wenneth Eulalio, Sam Dawson, and Mary Remy Joy Palma was barely enough to turn the tide.

Season 74 Rookie of the Year Ara Galang led DLSU with 15 points. Jeushl Wensh Tiu, who transfered from DLSU-Dasmariñas and is playing in her last year, joined forces with Galang and Reyes to secure the victory for the Lady Spikers.

Vargas posted 14 to lead the Morayta-based squad.

With the victory, DLSU now enjoys a three-way tie for second place with the Adamson Lady Falcons, which won the game before the DLSU and FEU match against the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons. The National University Lady Bulldogs also has a 2-1 win-loss record.

The Lady Spikers will test the University of the East Lady Warriors, which has yet to register a victory in three games, at the San Juan Arena this Sunday, December 16, 2012.
