Lady Archers seeks to repeat FCBL Crown

The DLSU Lady Archers started the 2013 Filipino-Chinese Basketball League (FCBL) Dickies Cup on a bad note as the team recorded a 1-3 win-loss slate after the first four games in the single round elimination bracket at the Philippine Buddha Care Academy Quezon City.

Derailed Lady Archers

The UAAP Season 75 bridesmaid suffered defeated at the hands of Centro Escolar University (CEU), in a 68-59 bout last December 2. While sister school, DLS-College of Saint Benilde, managed to pull a 52-64 win against the Lady Archers to deliver the team’s second loss in the tournament last December 8.

The ladies did not stay winless for long as the team notched their first win at the expense of the UST Tigresses to pull a close, 67-64, win last December 9. The Lyceum Lady Pirates, however, defeated the Lady Archers, which pinned the Green-and -White at the bottom of the tournament ranking.

A glimmer of hope

UAAP Mythical Five member Ara Abaca led the ladies from Taft, averaging double double with 12.5 points per game and 10.5 boards per contest.

Veteran point guards, Miller Ong and Trisha Piatos, reinforced the team’s arsenal by leading the offense with a combined average of 6.8 assists per game. Powerhouse veterans, for the most part, led the team.

Chances still alive

Despite the team’s 1-3 record, Head Coach Ty Bautista, argued the his players will improve their the individual abilities as a result of their losses. He added that their improvement would increase their chances in reclaiming the UAAP crown next year.

Coach Bautista lamented, “The team is using this FCBL tourney to become better both as individuals and as a team; we will use this tournament to see our strengths and weaknesses and improve on them so we will become a better team in the days to come, since it is hard to lose Kady [Wilson] and Hannah [Viterbo], but I have faith that my veterans will pull through as well as the team overall.”

This tournament is the first contest the Lady Archers joined after top blocker Wilson, and top three-point shooter Viterbo left due to graduation.

Catch the Lady Archers as the team faces the Adamson Lady Falcons this January 19 at the Philippine Buddha Care Academy Quezon City.
