Green Gallery: Carlos Muñoz

For over a year, the DLSU Green Batters’ very own and former De La Salle Zobel standout Carlos Muñoz has been training with the Philippine Baseball Team while juggling his time with his collegiate teammates. It is a dream that he always wanted to realize as a child.

Muñoz is one of the Green Batters’ reliable offensive players. The right-handed slugger norms 4 hits, 10.5 runs, 8 runs batted in (RBIs) and has a 0.342 batting average in his last two seasons with the Taft-based IX. As a national team player, Muñoz collected a gold medal after the Philippines ruled the 2011 Southeast Asian Games baseball event.

Allowing him to play for the national team gives him an edge over his collegiate rivals. Muñoz shares that he gets more experience since he meets many international players. He gets more practice and training, which he has capitalized on to improve his skills to play for his collegiate matches. He also adds that his training with the national team helped him focus on his role as one of DLSU’s main pitchers. He added, “It’s more specialized [with the national team] because there I’m only a pitcher so it’s only focused on pitching.”

Struggling to balance his obligations to the national team and the Green Batters, however, has not been easy. Muñoz admitted that the main issue is time management. He explained, “It is mostly time management because sometimes I really don’t have time for both. So I always end up picking one.”

His stint with the national team enabled him to learn a few tricks under his sleeve that will help him and his teammates prepare for their future matches. He concluded, “It definitely makes me a better player, I can bring it to the team and hopefully we’ll get better because of that.”
