Rant and Rave: The McSpicy

McSpicy

The Double Cheeseburger, the Quarter Pounder and the, yes italicized, Big Mac, a line up of delectable and highly fat inducing sandwiches that come from one of the most, if not the most, well-known fast food chain in the world – McDonalds.

Through the years, the restaurant has released a few sandwiches that were usually a hit and miss to the market. The very inexpensive crispy chicken fillet sandwich fill the stomachs of the millions of Filipinos wishing to save a peso or two, while flops like the Big n’ Tasty leave much to be desired.

The newest addition to the roster is the McSpicy, a new burger to grace McDonalds’ menu. Basically, a spicy chicken sandwich with mayo and lettuce, groundbreaking recipe indeed. Is this sandwich really worth people’s time? To be frank, no, not really.

It is without a doubt that a crispy chicken sandwich will make any Filipino’s palate explode with flavor. It caters to the taste of the everyday man from the archipelago. Another good thing about it is that it is a big sandwich. For the price of 80 pesos (à la carte), this burger will not only satisfy one’s hunger but it won’t hurt the wallet.

However, there are negatives that accompany the positives. For one thing, the McSpicy is reminiscent of KFC’s Zinger. Simply put, there is nothing new with the McSpicy, well, except it’s name. It would have been nice to see McDonalds come up with something unique but instead they came up with KFC’s burger. Nice one.

Burgers should live up to their names, the double cheeseburger with its two patties, and Wendy’s Baconator with its Bacon. There must be truth in what they are called. Saying this, the McSpicy should be Spicy right? Well, wrong. The sandwich was anything but spicy. It’s as if the company left the spicy components in their crates.  They should call it the “McMisnomer” or “McNot-So-Spicy”. Clearly this is good news for those who hate spicy food.

Overall, the McSpicy truly caters to the hungry man’s palate. The dish admittedly is good and it is sure to cover a person’s lunch and dinner expenses. In the end it is nothing new and this is what hit it hard, like a punch to the groin. People should be given something new, something fresh. If all McDonalds will offer is what KFC already has on its menu, then go to KFC if perfection is what one is after. If saving allowance is the name of the game then the McSpicy is a good choice.
