For the first time in quite a while, the DLSU Green Archers faced a huge deficit, as the JRU Heavy Bombers raced to an early double digit leadin the first half. Almond Vosotros and Jason Perkins combined for 18 points in the second half to lead the rally for La Salle, yet it wasn’t enough as DLSU fell to JRU, 69-68.

Careless turnovers and timely shots from JRU’s Philip Paniamogan and Tey Teodoro kept the Green Archers at bay and handed them their first loss since the PCCL finals last year.

DLSU struggled in the early quarter as JRU raced to a 13-4 lead with four minutes left in the first. Jeron Teng and Norbert Torres combined for 10 points to cut the JRU lead to five, 21-16, at the end of the first period.

In the second quarter, the Green Archers could not cut the JRU lead as sloppy passes failed to give them the touches they needed to create their offensive rhythm. As a result, the Heavy Bombers continued to build their lead, pushing it to 18, 44-26, on a Gio Lasquety basket heading into halftime.

After, JRU stretched their lead to its largest at 19, 45-26, DLSU  went on a blistering 16-2 run to cut the deficit to 5, 47-42 midway through the third. Threes from Vosotros and Teng, and timely baskets from Norbert Torres and Thomas Torres swung the momentum in favor of the Green Archers. JRU’s Teodoro responded with 10 points, giving the Heavy Bombers a 57-48 cushion heading into the fourth.

In the fourth, Julian Sargent completed a crucial three point play that ignited an 11-2 DLSU run that gave the Green Archers the lead for the first time in the game. Both teams traded baskets with both squads shifting the lead heading into the final minutes. A crucial basket from JRU’s Phillip Mabulac put the Heavy Bombers ahead for good, with Perkins missing his final attempt at the buzzer.

Teng led the Green Archers with 17 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Arnold van Opstal had 13 points, seven rebounds, and only one miss from the field. Vosotros had 13 points and four assists to round up the double digit scorers for DLSU.

Despite the loss, DLSU outrebounded JRU 39-28 and had more blocks, 3-1. DLSU was hounded by their turnovers as they came up with 25 compared to JRU’s 12.

Up next for the Green Archers is a match-up against the UV Lancers at 7 pm on May 23 in Cebu City.
