UAAP: Lady Archers overpower UP for third straight victory

The DLSU Lady Archers, winners of their last two games, added another win to their tally after thrashing the UP Lady Maroons, 76-34, in their match yesterday at the Blue Eagle Gym in Quezon City.

Camille Claro spearheaded a balanced scoring attack for La Salle with 13 points and five assists. Ana Castillo added 11 points, built on three three-pointers, in a potent offensive charge that saw eight Lady Archers score at least five points in the game.

UP was led by senior Bea Daez, who had double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. She, however, had little support throughout the match as the Diliman-based squad struggled getting through La Salle’s stifling defense.

The Green and White got into a rousing start in the first frame, going on a 10-0 run and building a lead as high as 12 points. The Lady Maroons cut the lead to eight after Lourdes Ordoveza made a layup with three minutes left in the quarter. The score ended 21-12 in favor of La Salle.

In the second frame, the Lady Archers hustled and barrelled their way into the paint to pad their lead even further. Led by Claro’s playmaking, they pushed the tempo and forced UP into several turnovers. DLSU’s lead increased to 17, 40-23, before halftime.

The game blew wide open come the third quarter. A big 15-2 charge by DLSU that culminated in a Bennette Revillosa fast-break layup gave the team an imposing 30-point lead. The Lady Maroons only converted two field goals in the quarter, failing to score both inside and outside the paint.

By the time the final quarter began, the game was already out of reach for the UP Lady Maroons. The Taft-based squad unleashed a massive 16-0 run to begin the fourth quarter. This gave them their biggest lead in the game at 43 points, 73-30. Fretzie Oyao would score the final point of the game after nailing one of two free throws, bringing the final score to 76-34.

The Lady Archers forced UP into committing 32 turnovers and limited them to only 22 percent field goal shooting. The Lady Maroons failed to nail a single outside shot while allowing their rivals to troop inside the paint for 46 points.

Up next for the Lady Archers are their archrivals the Ateneo Lady Eagles, whom they will face this Wednesday, September 23, at 1 pm in the Blue Eagle Gym.
