UAAP: Lady Woodpushers continue to dominate, Green Woodpushers bounce back

Round six of the UAAP Season 79 Chess Tournament took place last February 19, with the DLSU Lady Woodpushers claiming another victory at the Henry Sy Sr. Hall. DLSU currently sits in first place with 19.5 points. Not far behind are the FEU Lady Tamaraws with 18.5 points. Meanwhile, the AdU Lady Falcons wrap up the top three with a tally of 14 points in the women’s division.

Meanwhile, the men’s team currently sits at the fourth spot of the rankings with 12.5 points. The NU Bulldogs, as of now, occupy the number one seed with 18 points. Meanwhile, the FEU Tamaraws sit behind with 16 points whilst the UST Growling Tigers are currently in third place with 14.5 points.

Lady Woodpushers continue to dominate  

The Lady Woodpushers crushed the UST Growling Tigresses with a 3.5-0.5 score to gain another win for La Salle. The first match featured Lady Woodpusher Bernadette Galas and Growling Tigresses Michella Concio with the former winning the match, 1-0. The following match ended with a tie with DLSU’s Marie San Diego and Cyamir Villanueva battling it out, 0.5-0.5. The next two matches had the same result as La Salle’s Rowlyn-Joy Acedo and Mira Marino won their matches against UST’s May Alcantara and Highzzy Manaloto with a 1-0 score.

The Lady Woodpushers also dominated the UE Lady Warriors, 3.5-0.5, as the latter struggled to fight back. Galas opened the day with a win against UE’s Vilamor Nebato with a score of 1-0. The win was short lived, however, as La Salle contested to a tie in its next match.

San Diego and Lady Warrior Virgenie Ruaya had a close-fought battle which ended in a draw, 0.5-0.5. The draw did not stop the Green-and-White as Rowlyn-Joy Acedo and Ella Moulic won their matches, 1-0, against Crystal Werra and Cristhina Medenilla, respectively.

Men’s team comeback

The Green Woodpushers came back from a loss to UST by winning against the UP Fighting Maroons, 3-1. The first match of the day had DLSU’s Jeazzir Surpossa losing to Kristian Cristobal with a score of 1-0. Next, Green Woodpusher Giovanni Mejia avenged Surposss’s defeat against Mac Labasano, also to a scoreline of 1-0. La Salle’s Christian Nanola and Denzel Amar had the same result as Mejia as they won against Justin Corpin and Alson Lim, respectively.

The Green Woodpushers were also able to win their match against the FEU Tamaraws with a score of 2.5-1.5. Green Woodpusher Surposa started off with a draw, 0.5-0.5, against FEU’s Paul Evangelista. Mejia also had the same result as Surposa, battling Tamaraw Rhenzi Sevillano to another draw. Nanola was the only Woodpusher to win a match for DLSU, 1-0, as he went up against Tamaraw Coellier Graspela. The day ended for the men’s team with Amar and Jose Castro fighting to another draw, 0.5-0.5.

La Salle will aim to continue its winning streak this February 26 with the women’s team set to face AdU Lady Falcons at round seven. Meanwhile, the men’s team will face the UE Red Warriors. Both matchups will take place at the same venue at 1  pm.
