Vox Populi: In what ways can the USG serve students during an online academic year?

“The USG can focus on the mental health of the students. They can make a safe space where the students can air out their concerns without the fear of other people judging them” —Christian Sing (IV, AEF-MGT)
“The USG can help students make online classes more bearable. If the USG can help in easing the load of the subjects that the students take in online classes. Some may say that online classes are easy since we don’t need to travel to school but what they don’t realize is that without physical classes, we lose the chance to have social interactions with our classmates and friends which is a major part of growing up.” —Warren Cedeic Sy O (II, BS-CE)
“What students are heavily deprived of today is social interaction. Ever since the lockdown was implemented, the majority of us have been forced to stay at home in order to away (sic) from other people in our community. With that being said, USG must implement programs or projects that will fill that void amongst the student (sic) of De La Salle University. “As the pandemic continues to raise uncertainty, the gap between the campus and the students continues to widen, brought about by the distanced learning situation. The students are in need of a means to communicate their growing concerns to the university. “In my own thoughts, I think the best way or ways the USG can serve within an online environment is to further enable its connection with the student body. I am fully aware that there are already initiatives working for this objective. We have our own USG page as well as our different dedicated batch group chats but in my experience, most of these have only addressed issues considered “formal” in a student’s case such as announcements or helpdesks which is completely fine. However, if the USG is to improve further, it needs to create a much more personal approach with the student body. It (USG) can address issues that have often hindered a student’s life such as promoting a safe space online where everyone could rely on whenever they need support. I’ve also seen ideas where different students would create channels within social media or messaging apps where they could mimic various campus areas such as Goks (Gokongwei Hall).” —Eduard Hordejan (IV, BS-AEF)
“I believe that the USG should help amplify the voices of those students who are left behind during this pandemic, thus pushing for a “No Student Left Behind” mindset. “USG could create events that will allow students to socialize with one another through online means which would not only benefit extroverts who love socializing, but even the introverts who see online platforms as a form of security when interacting with other people. Not everyone is comfortable with the online set-up, most especially in terms of communicating with other people. Through USG, it became a lot easier for a lot of people to translate their concerns into actions without the fear of being judged. USG has and continuously became a medium for students who are in need of help in navigating the online university set-up. Simplifying announcements and constantly reminding students are also some of USG’s biggest initiatives in ensuring that the student body remains informed and updated. From simple concerns about their professors, attendance and even classmates to enrollment and calendar issues. USG can be a friend they rely on to help them survive [these] current times.
“Now that DLSU has implemented a modular type of learning system due to the pandemic, our University Student Government can best serve the student body by being empathetic not only to us students but also to our professors as well. Our USG must have open eyes to the fact that the Lasallian student body comes from different backgrounds — that Lasallians come from varying playing fields. Some of us may be comfortable with this setup, but at the same time there may be some of us who are not, especially considering that life in general has become difficult because of the pandemic. This is why now we need student leaders who are not only empathetic but also prevailing amid the difficulties we are facing. We need Lasallian leaders whom we can rely on — that through them all our voices can be heard.” —Mier Dela Cruz (III, AB-POM)
“Given that everything is online nowadays, I think that the USG could best serve the DLSU student body by making their presence even greater online. Prior to the pandemic, I believe that the student government already had a strong online presence, therefore the challenge for them now is how to step it up given the current situation. Maybe increasing efforts to be more connected online through social media groups or group chats could be one way to go. In a sense, it would be great if they made us feel more connected to them, almost like how we would feel more connected to a personal friend. By having a larger presence, online communication can be smoother and more fluid. Also by making us feel like the USG is more approachable, people would feel less discouraged or even embarrassed to go to them for the problems they experience in these trying times.” —Miguel Leechiu (IV, AEI-MGT)
“I remember seeing a post [on] Facebook about a student collecting donations for a friend who [does] not have access to Wi-Fi connection. I believe that support by providing pocket Wi-Fis or data subsidies can really help the student body since many are troubled with internet connectivity. Also, the USG should also be able to keep in touch with the student body for their insights and concerns, which should be able to help the administration arrive [at] a fair judgement.” —Remboy Manalac (III, BS-IE)
