The DLSU Green Archers continue its road to recovery in its recent tight win against the feisty University of Perpetual Help System DALTA squad 75-67 in the continuing 2012 FilOil Pre-season games.
Spurts and rallies between the two teams in the first 20 minutes of play kept the scores close.
The UPHSD Altas came up firing, which gave them the upper hand in the first canto of the game.
Norbert Torres, though, stepped up and led the charge, baging 13 points in the opening quarter, including a personal 9-0 run in the middle of the quarter to give the Green-and-White squad the lead.
Costly turnovers hurt the Green Archers in the latter part of the second quarter, which Perpetual used to gain advantage. Perpetual converted giveaways into fast breaks, which gave them the led by 5 heading into halftime.
A strong start by the Archers in the third quarter shocked the Altas.
The Green Archers opened the second half strong, led by sixth-man Mac Tallo who dished out crucial assists, and rookie Jeron Teng who provided the offense.
The bang-and-a-bucket play by Teng in the latter part of the third quarter was the go ahead basket for the Archers; the team did not let Perpetual taste the lead again.
The Archers continued to score from the field using the team’s trademark full-court defence to put pressure on the frantic Perpetual team.
Torres led the charge for the Green Archers with 20 points and eight boards. Teng and Tallo contributed 16 and 12 points apiece.
Anthony Paulino and Jett Vidal led UPHSD with 12 and 11 markers respectively.
“We gave 41 points in the first half to them [Perpetual]. We had too many turnovers in the first half that really hurt us. That’s what we focused on our adjustments for the second half.” said Archers Head Coach Gee Abanilla, who leads the rebuilding Taft-based team.
“Our big guys played great today. We need them, together with the team’s veterans to build our chemistry better. It’s what we are working for right now.” he added.
The victory over UPHSD is DLSU’s fourth win out of six in this year’s pre-season cup.
Quarter scores: 22-17, 36-41, 58-55, 75-67.
