Crunching the digits: Green Archers’ FilOil stint by the numbers

It has been almost a month since the De La Salle University Green Archers finished bridesmaids in the 2012 FilOil Flying V Pre-Season Hanes Cup Tournament.They placed second out of 18 NCAA and UAAP squads, behind first-time champions National University Bulldogs.

 

The LaSallian presents some interesting figures that highlight the Archers’ breakaway pre-season performance.

 

63: Average free throw shooting percentage of the Green Archers has improved from last UAAP season’s 57 percent. Rookie Jeron Teng tops the list in free throw shooting; he converted 37 out of 51 (73 percent) during the team’s 11-game campaign.

 

3: Number of times the Archers appeared in the FilOil finale. They were tournament champions back in the 2006 and 2007 editions.

 

52: Total number of blocks the Green Archers made throughout the tournament. This includes the block frenzy against the San Sebastian Stags where the Green Archers chalked up 13 rejections.

 

6: Number of players sidelined in the Green Archers’ roster for the summer league. The injury list includes Arnold van Opstal, L.A. Revilla, Luigi dela Paz, Yutien Andrada, Oda Tampus, and Gabby Reyes.

 

46: Points tallied by the San Beda Red Lions in the team’s semifinal match against the Green Archers. Prior to the game, the reigning NCAA Champions were averaging a dominating 74.4 points.

 

30: Highest number of turnover points allowed by the Archers. The Taft-based squad yielded thirty turnover points in their 65-67 loss against the University of the East.

 

16.6: Average scoring output of Green-and-White squad rookies, Mark Tallo, Thomas Torres, Teng and Reyes. Among the four, Teng garnered the highest with 10.8 points per game.

 

32: Lowest total field goal percentage of the Archers. The Taft-based squad had a horrible shooting outing during their games against archrivals Ateneo and San Beda Red Lions.

 

21: Most number of points scored by a single player against the Green Archers. The distinction belongs to Ateneo’s Ryan Buenafe in just 28 minutes of action.

 

4: Lowest output of rookie hotshot Teng. The Xavier baller had a dismal outing as he only made one of nine field goals throughout his 31 minutes of fame during the title match against NU.

 

9: Number of different starting fives coach Gee Abanilla played during the tournament. Of all five positions, only Mythical Five member and starting center Norbert Torres started as a regular for the Green Archers during the entire tournament.

 

1: Number of Green Archers included in the Mythical Five. Norbert Torres who averaged a double-double performance of 11.7 points and 10.3 rebounds received the accolade. Other members are Ateneo’s Kiefer Ravena and Greg Slaughter, NU’s Emmanuel Mbe, who also copped the Defensive Player of the tournament plum, and tournament MVP Bobby Ray Parks.
