UAAP: Archers hurdle Bulldogs in double OT behind Teng’s 35

This kid just keeps on getting better and better.

18 year-old rookie forward Jeron Teng exploded for a career-high 35 points as the DLSU Green Archers escaped from another tightly contested game, pulling away with an 87-86 double-overtime thriller against the National University Bulldogs today, August 18, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Teng also added six boards and two dimes to round out his career performance. The Xavier standout was the first Archer to score at least 30 points since fellow Xavier alumnus Joseph Yeo had a 31-point performance back in 2003.

“I wasn’t looking to score naman talaga pero I had to step up because L.A. [Revilla] didn’t practice for the whole week,” shared Teng.

Teng, with his impressive 35-point effort, had the most number of points tallied by a rookie in a single game since the UAAP computerized their stat recording in 2003.

After struggling in the previous games, Almond Vosotros finally broke out of his scoring funk as he tallied 18 markers to go along with six rebounds and three assists.

“Hats-off to Almond and Jeron for really playing well, and the rest of the team for really hanging together and staying tough in two overtime games again,” applauded Coach Gee Abanilla, talking about his team’s performance.

On the other hand, reigning UAAP MVP Bobby Ray Parks led the Bulldogs with an all-around performance, exactly matching Teng’s 35 points and adding seven rebounds and three assists, while rookie Jeth Rosario had a double-double performance with 14 points and 13 boards.

The Archers pulled away for good as they opened the second overtime period with consecutive three-pointers from Teng and Vosotros to put them up 85-79.

As Vosotros split his charities with 5 seconds left in the second extended regulation, Parks ran the down the floor and sank a desperation buzzer-beating three-pointer, trimming the lead to one which wasn’t enough to lift the Bulldogs to a victory.

“First of all thank God kasi sobrang, this season, parang wala ako,” added Vosotros.

The Taft-based squad almost sealed the victory in the 4th quarter after Vosotros made a freebie to tow the Archers to a 69-67 lead.

But the Bulldogs countered as Parks found Rosario beneath the basket to knot the score at 69. Vosotros would then miss a potential game-winning corner fade away jumper.

Entering the first overtime period, Teng scored five quick points to take a slim 74-71 lead.  Parks would then respond by scoring the next six points to force a 79 point deadlock. Yutien Andrada would also miss another potential game-winning corner jumper, leading to another overtime period.

“It’s a good learning experience for them and I think this will be beneficial for us as the second round approaches. But again, this special group of boys just hangs tough and we’re very happy about it,” said Coach Abanilla about the efforts of his team.

The Archers got off to a hot start, racing to an early 15-7 lead, with Teng scoring 11 first quarter points in only 7 minutes of play.

They would end the opening canto with a 25-14 advantage after Vostros and team captain Revilla cashed in back-to-back outside shots.

National U then responded with a strong 15-4 run in the second canto as they grabbed a 31-29 lead after an Mbe putback. Vosotros kept the Archers’ arrows within striking distance by dialing in two consecutive shots from beyond the arc.

The Archers held a 42-37 lead at halftime.

With this win, the Archers are currently tied at 4th place in the standings with National U with both teams sporting a 4-3 win-loss record.

“I just feel that [in] all our games may pag-asa kahit paano na manalo, but it’s just we don’t know how to win the early part of the season and I’m just hoping we learn something from this,” concluded Coach Abanilla.

pathetic yung sportswriters..instances of wrong grammar, pilit na paggamit ng sports news jargon..ive seen better high school sports news writers.

Cheers!

I love how you really pointed out that sir. Thanks, or may I say, NO THANKS.
And there was really no need to compare, was there?
What if they are better? I don’t care.

All I can say is that I got informed by reading this article and that it is not always about being the best in writing, it is about giving the right details.

If you don’t think it was well-written, tell it constructively. Keep in mind that the people writing these are college students who study first before doing this. They are not PROS yet.

I’ve seen better people. 😛

My bad. I admit, mali mali nga to compare them with other writers and yes i most certainly agree na writing is STILL is “about giving the right details”. Consider this then as a friendly reminder na there is still room for improvement for the writers. I personally think kasi na yung sports section ng The Lasallian (no offense meant) talagang lags behind compared other sections nung school organ (I compared na naman XD). My apologies to the writers at sa iba pang na-offend.

Peace out!

PS: this comes from a Lasallian who religiously reads The Lasallian and Ang Pahayagang Plaridel!

I dare you to make a better ports article! you should remember that the people behind every article published in ‘TheLasallian’ are just students, they dont get paid for writing nor do they get any special privileges from the university… and given the fact that DLSU operates under a trimestral system, it’s amazing how these students still manage to find the time to write timely articles. now, do me a favor and be stupid somewhere else

Hello nspc08

Yes, those high school sports news writers might be better than our sports writers, but you’re not completely certain that they will continue their writing comes college. It’s not an easy task to write while you have acads to ponder on. These writers write out of passion. Maybe you want to check the other university pubs, and “scrutinize” their articles?

@2a611073d55ff082bf2767959b2bf01c:disqus i have always pointed out numerous wrong grammar over the past articles … since their task is to be the editors of the school paper, grammar should be correctly written, no excuses, Do your job RIGHT.

try to read your own comment before you even bother criticizing the article.

hey grammar pulis, reveal yourself. masyado kang magpagmataas. kala mo perpekto ka, you write your articles about the game then bigay mo sa writers ng publication na to para makita nila kung gano ka ka-Diyos when it comes to your grammar skills.

numerous wrong grammar?!?!?!?!

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

SHOULDN’T IT BE NUMEROUS PIECES (OR ANY SYNONYM APPLICABLE) OF WRONG GRAMMAR?!?!?!!?! Fix yourself first, whoever you are.

AND OH YEAH, YOU ARE THE ONE WHO SAID IT WAS ‘GRAMMARS’ MULTIPLE TIMES. YEAH RIGHT!!! Glad you made the change now. 😉

To the writers of this article:
Pardon my rant above.
Evaluate yourself and defy all the hate.
Continue to do all actions for the love of Him.
Keep it up guys, and Animo La Salle! :>

“Since their task is to be the editors of the school paper, grammar should be correctly written.”
Correct grammar is observed, it is NOT WRITTEN. You don’t WRITE CORRECT GRAMMAR, you write WITH correct grammar; you observe CORRECT GRAMMAR.
[ no excuses Do your job RIGHT ]
Wow pare, ANG DEEP MO.

Unless you’re the person who give these people their paychecks (if they even have any), or affected to an extent that you deserve special attention, then by all means, complain your heart out. But in this situation, I say to you: Go fuck yourself. I thought of being reasonable to you, but I figured you don’t deserve it.

Please understand these Lasallians, They are trying their best. Nobody can create the best news article in the world.

If you think mali ung grammar ng writer, then you should apply as editor. I think they’ll be recruiting sa 3rd term. 🙂

He’s just doing his “job” naman eh.

Tandaan mo mga to ha? Salamat 🙂

Kunwari pang marami! haha halatang affected. Ganyan ba kayo mga La Salista? mga pikon?

Kung mali, tanggapin ang mali. Wag pikon at daanan sa pangiinsulto.
