UAAP: DLSU Shuttlers redeem themselves with two win streak

Suffering from setbacks against the last year’s first runner-up, the Green and Lady Shuttlers bounced back with back-to-back victories last August 18 to 19 to stay within the upper half of the UAAP Season 75 Badminton Championships.

The Green Shuttlers made a definite comeback, achieving a solid 5-0 victory against Adamson University. Challenging their win was UST that suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Taft-based squad, earning them their second win in two days.

The Lady Shuttlers also returned in fashion after dominating National University with a 4-1 win. Continuing their streak came at the expense of the Fighting Maroons, after the Lady Shuttlers finished with a 3-2 win.

One-sided victory

Kenneth Monterubio started the DLSU-AdU match by defeating Jerome Pechera in the first singles to score 21-12, 21-12 marking the beginning of the Shuttlers’ domination of the entire game.

Elijah Bojac scored another game for La Salle as he defeated Kint Bacong with 21-17, 21-15 in the second singles.

Securing the Green Shuttlers’ win was the Carlos Cayanan-Gerald Sibayan duo in the first doubles, as they dominated Arnold So and Edwin Villoria, 21-10, 21-11.

Delivering the fourth win was the pair of Allen Del Mundo and Ronel Estanislao against Jerome Pechera and Keith Reyes, 21-14, 21-16.

Finishing the downed Falcon was JC Clarito as he defeated AdU’s Jordan Alcantara in the third singles, 21-16, 21-13.

Grabbing the third win

Giving the Taft-based squad their third win of the season was UST as the match ended with a 3-2 scale favoring DLSU.

DLSU’s Monterubio delivered the first win as he scored 21-17, 21-16 against UST’s  Rj Ormilla in the first singles.

Adding to the score was Green Shuttler Estanislao as he defeated Alcaed Sabanal in the second singles, 21-16, 21-16.

Cutting the Shuttlers’ win was the UST pair of Salvador Kapunan and Ormilla, passing through Cayanan and Sibayan in the first doubles to score 17-21, 21-18.

Sealing the deal went to the hands of the tested DLSU pair, Lance Bautista and Estanislao, as they dominated the UST duo of Kit Cajefe and Paul Pantig, 21-13, 21-9 in the second doubles.

UST’s loss didn’t go quite quietly as Kapunan defeated a relentless Clarito in the third singles and scored 13-21, 21-17, 15-21.

Back on the road

Coming from a recent loss against their archrival Ateneo, the Lady Shuttlers sprang back into action as they defeated NU in the women’s division.

Delivering the first blow was DLSU’s Danica Bolos, defeating Rainelle Reformina to score 21-11, 21-14 in the first singles, followed by Danica San Ignacio’s 21-6, 21-6 win in the second singles against Danica Llamas.

Bolos and Angelica Ramos finished the job for the Lady Shuttlers as they outmatched NU’s own tandem Loverly Magallano and Kristine Padura in doubles one, 21-16, 21-19.

Striking NU once more was DLSU’s pair of Flo Lamigo and Aires Montilla, after defeating Lovely Ladi and Reformina, dominating the second doubles with a score of 21-9, 21-8.

NU’s Magallano ended what could have been a perfect win for the Lady Shuttlers as she defeated Kristelle Salatan, 13-21, 22-20, 14-21.

Second target

Fresh from their win against NU, the Lady Shuttlers acquired their fourth win at UP’s expense in a 3-2 fashion.

Drawing the first win for DLSU was San Ignacio who battled it out in the first singles against UP’s Pauline Tan to score 21-14, 18-21, 21-13.

Bolos failed to defend the Lady Shuttlers’ lead after UP’s Mitzel Buiza stole the second singles, 13-21, 11-21.

Taking the advantage back to DLSU’s side was the pair of Flo Lamigo and Aires Montilla after defeating Bianca Legaspi and Tan in the first doubles while scoring 21-11, 19-21, 21-12.

In the second doubles, DLSU’s pair Bolos and Salatan managed to end the bout after defeating UP’s Caitlin Dionisio and Abigail Garcia to score 21-12, 21-18, giving the Lady Shuttlers their fourth win of the season.

The third singles did not go well for DLSU as Angelica Ramos was defeated by Legaspi to give the Lady Fighting Maroons their final win of the match. The game ended with 15-21, 21-23.
