UAAP: Archers start second round over Warriors

Coming off two straight victories, the Green Archers ended the first round of the UAAP Season 75 with a 4-3 record. The Green-and-White squad is set to open the second round against the UE Red Warriors squad that has a 1-6 card.

On a July 19 thriller at the Big Dome, the Taft-based squad beat the Warriors convincingly, 67-59.

Lessons from the first encounter

Despite pulling a victory in their first meeting, the Gee Abanilla-mentored squad found a couple of loopholes in their play.

Though the Archers are bigger than the Warriors, many of them were outhustled inside the paint as their Red-and-White counterparts defended the shaded area, blocking seven shots compared to Archers’ three.

Though the Archers managed a win, the team did not fulfill the expectation that DLSU would dominate the boards by a huge advantage; the Archers only managed to lead the rebounding battle, 45-40.

Moreover, the Codiñerra-mentored squad almost outplayed the Archers in the first half of the encounter.

The Taft-based team was shaken as big man Norbert Torres incurred two fouls, and Team Captain LA Revilla did not manage a basket in the first canto.

The way to win

Clogging down UE’s main man, Roi Sumang, just like before should be the Green-and-White squad’s best bet for a win. In their last encounter, the Archers held him scoreless in the final period.

Offense wise, the Green-and-White squad should continue their balanced scoring on the floor. The Archers will need consistent bench support and point production particularly from Revilla, N. Torres, and rookie Jeron Teng.

Capitalizing on the changes

The Warriors will be playing their first game after their Head Coach Jerry Codiñerra left his position in the squad; he was appointed as UE’s sports consultant.

Former UE orchestrator Boyzie Zamar will return to take over the Warriors’ game against the Archers.

The appointment of a new coach could cause miscommunication between the Warriors; the Archers should capitalize on the resulting mistakes.

Could the Archers extend their two-game winning streak or will they start tumbling in the second round tour of duty as the Warriors try to improve their stand in the season?

Questions are up until they meet at the Mall of Asia Arena on August 25.

And if you want to look at it at the perspective you are trying to imply, even they have not won yet, they are still over in terms of team standings. get it?

Wow! You know just admit your mistake. What a lame explanation for using the word OVER, Kahit saan angle mo tignan mali yan. Even the regular newspapers never use OVER when highlighting an upcoming game. First comes to mind when reading the title is that DLSU already defeated UE to start the second round. Quit making excuses.
