Behind the spotlight: Bro. Bernie Oca, FSC

There is always one person in the sidelines cheering for the Green-and-White regardless of the sport or the situation a particular team is in.

During UAAP games, he is usually spotted wearing his pair of shades matched with his Green-and-White varsity jacket. No Lasallian fails to recognize him because of his beaming smile and warm greetings.

He is the Vice Chancellor of Lasallian Missions and Alumni Relations (VCLMAR) Br. Bernie Oca, FSC.

Since taking over as VCLMAR, Br. Bernie has changed the view of many on student atheletes.

He is widely known as a sports-oriented person, especially when it comes to golf. His typical schedule includes early morning prayers with his fellow Brothers, a balanced breakfast, and office work for the University.

During his idle time, he roams around the Enrique Razon Sports Complex to take a look at the different varsity teams, watch their scrimmages, and share stories with the coaching to update himself with everything that has to do with the DLSU sports scene.

Eyes on the ultimate prize

DLSU has always been known for its academic reputation. It is, however, also known for its sports programs.

It is no secret that many DLSU athletes are showing an improved performance not j in sports and in academics, proven by statistics that more and more athletes come out in the Dean’s List.

With DLSU currently at the top of the general championship tally in the first half of  UAAP ‘75, the man behind the scene wishes to see an improved performance.

“I truly wish we could win it all this time around, this will be our first time to be overall champions. Credit University of Santo Tomas for they always give a good fight,” commended Br. Oca.

The General Championship bout has been a cockfight between DLSU and UST in the past three seasons. Last UAAP season, DLSU was just nine points away from snatching the General Championship crown from the 39-time GC champions from España.

Leader and a motivator

With Br. Bernie’s support and presence has been well-received by many sports teams.

Defending UAAP women’s volleyball champions the Lady Spikers expressed gratitude for Br. Bernie’s support and presence during practice sessions and official matches.

“Si Brother [Bernie Oca] sobrang supportive siya sa amin and sa lahat ng sports kaya yung impact niya and motivation na nabibigay niya nafefeel ng mga players kaya lagi binibigay ng lahat ng mga players ang makakaya nila para manalo,”  shared Head Coach Ramil de Jesus.

DLSU Judo Assistant Coach Jayson Senales quipped that Br. Bernie has always been a competitive in whatever field he is in, including sports. He furthers, “He is a key supporter for any varsity team, and he always reminds all the athletes that coordination, faith and trust are the keys for La Salle to bring the UAAP General Championship crown for the first time to Taft Avenue.”
