Economics majors Jesson Pagaduan and Rorian Pratyaksa placed 3rd in the 10th Economix Essay Competition held in the Indonesia, last November 11-15, 2012.
The winning pair, together with four other teams, represented the University in the annual essay competition, which is part of the 10th Economix Conference sponsored by the University of Indonesia and the Indonesian Development and Economic Studies (KANOPI) Faculty of Economics. With the theme “Facing the New Stage of Global Economy: The Asian Century”, Pagaduan and Pratyaksa presented a paper on the need to establish institutions that could help address and hasten investment facilitation in the Asian countries, entitled “Asian Investment Institution Initiative”.
Gio Dalisay and Sharmaine Sy, and Ariane Lim and Kaila Astorga also made it to the competition’s finals round, totalling to three DLSU teams in the Top 5 best teams. To qualify, all participants presented and defended their research papers, which centered on understanding how countries could avoid the middle income trap. From 20 pairs, the Top 5 teams were selected.
Students from the University of Sto. Tomas were held as the competition’s 1st runners-up, while representatives from the host university, University of Indonesia, brought home the top prize. Pagaduan and Pratyaksa won a cash prize of USD 400. The 2nd placers received USD 600, while the champions won USD 1000.
More than 350 participants attended the annual conference and competition, which was organized to develop the ASEAN youth’s understanding of economic issues and to strengthen their relationship with one another.
