CED to improve after mock accreditation

DLSU’s College of Education (CED) allegedly failed the University’s recent mock Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools (PAASCU) accreditation held last last November 12-13.

In an interview with The LaSallian last November, DLSU President and Chancellor Br. Ricky Laguda FSC explains, “The desire of the University is always to put its best foot forward with or without PAASCU. We continue to remind the faculty that PAASCU is only here to validate or confirm what are our areas of strengths and areas of improvement.”

College of Education (CED) Dean Dr. Voltaire Mistades explains that the accrediting committee had identified several rooms for improvement. He adds that one of the things the committee wanted to address is the number of young faculty, the level of difficulty of exams that would enhance critical thinking and the addition of more online resources.

In response, Dr. Mistades assures that the college will retrain its faculty to help them encourage student participation in classes. The college will continue to build and add more online resources for research.

The committee also identified several strong points in the college. Dr. Mistades explains that the college’s research output met the requirements and the facilities of the college passed the accreditation.

Dr. Mistades was appointed by former DLSU President and Chancellor Br. Jun Erguiza FSC last May 2012. Prior to his appointment, the Dr. Mistades had already taught at the college.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) identified the aforementioned college as a Center of Excellence (COE) in teacher education, effective from June 2, 2008 to June 2, 2011.

Dr. Mistades cites that the college has consistently achieved an above 90 percent passing rate in the Licensure Exam for Teachers (LET) for the past nine years. Last September 30, 2012, DLSU Education majors achieved a 100 percent passing rate in the recently administered LET.

A perfect 39 out of 39 DLSU students passed the Elementary level exam while 20 out of 20 exam takers passed the Secondary level exam.

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) and the Board for Professional Teachers (BPT) announced last November 26 that 25,136 elementary teachers out of 50,997 examinees (49.29 percent) and 20,834 secondary teachers out of 47,892 examinees (43.50 percent) successfully passed the LET.
