A team composed of 10 students competed last Saturday, February 2, at the UA&P grounds in a friendly Handball match.
Seven sophomore students, and three freshmen students who first learned the sport in a Physical Education class under Francisco Borlain represented DLSU.
University of Asia and the Pacific started the match with a 5-0 run, but the Green-and-White squad answered back, keeping the score close at 5-4 halfway before the first half. La Salle, however, could not keep a steady frontline and gave up eight more points after earning six. The first half eneded 13-10, in favor of UA&P.
The second half was a different story for La Salle. Stingy defense and a strong frontline helped the Taft-based squad get back in the game with less than 15 minutes remaining. The squad managed to catch up a point behind UA&P, 20-19.
La Salle, however, started to succumb to fatigue. UA&P took full advantage and controlled the rest of the game, ending the match at 29-21, capped by a 9-2 run in the last 10 minutes of the match.
Despite the loss, Team Captain Pocholo Gutierrez remained positive about the team’s future. He explained, “First off, it was a great experience for us, and due credit must also be given to Coach Borlain and the P.E department. The effort we put to train and make the friendly a success was worth it.”
“I hope the school can make handball not only known as just a class, but also as an established sport in DLSU,” Gutierrez added.
The team is set to face ADMU for another friendly on next month.
