GCOE breaks CLA’s streak in Pump Up the Animo

Cheers from Lasallian supporters reverberated through the Ninoy Aquino stadium as the fifth annual Pump Up the Animo, an intercollegiate cheerdance competition, took place. The Gokongwei College of Engineering (GCOE) emerged as the champion, cutting short the supposed three-peat streak of the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) last March 23.

The College of Education together with the College of Computer Studies (ECS) and the College of Science finished at second and third, respectively.

The lineup

GCOE had to compete against four other colleges before snatching the crown from the defending champion, CLA.

The ECS team started the competition. Although a mixture of two different colleges, the team pulled through and placed second with the score of 213 out of the possible 300.

ECS Team Captain Will Cheng explained, “We were really shocked actually we weren’t expecting it.”

The next performance was from CBE, which was composed of members from the Ramon V. Del Rosario Sr. College of Business (RVR COB) and the School of Economics (SOE). With Red Chinese themed outfits, the CBE squad made use of various floor-works in the hopes of improving its 3rd place finish last year.

Hoping to extend their winning streak, the College of Liberal Arts sported an unusual, but creative wedding routine. Due to numerous penalties and deductions CLA fell short against its stronger contender with a total of 205 points.

CLA two time Team Captain Issa Abello shared, “I think we didn’t show that we wanted it as bad as we should have.”
The bridesmaid from last year’s competition was more than eager to claim its second championship. With a routine of well executed stunts and tosses, GCOE dominated the entire floor. The squad managed to score an all-time high Pump Up record of 229 points, allowing the squad to end CLA’s two year winning streak.

The College of Science (COS) closed the competition. Despite failing to place last year, the black and yellow squad managed to turn heads after winning third place.

Final curtain call

All the colleges that participated in this year’s competition are determined to fight again if given another chance.

An ECS respondent said, “If there is a Pump Up the Animo because there were rumors that this will be the last pump up of DLSU.”
Although it was announced earlier that Pump Up the Animo may not be continued next year, Office of Sports Development ProgramManager Thaddeus Carvajal explained that there are other plans in the future.

“As early as July or probably August in terms of my timetable, we will be ready to planning for it, and we’re already introducing the idea to the whole Lasallian community,” added Carvajal.
