Multi-award winning Filipino filmmaker Peque Gallaga’s collection turnover was held on the 13th floor of the DLSU Learning Commons in the Henry Sy, Sr. Building, April 29.

The collection includes film scripts, movie posters, photo albums, medals, trophies and other memorabilia from Gallaga’s personal collection. “I think the most valuable thing there are my shotlists,” shares Gallaga. “[They] show how I thought of breaking down the scenes into shots.”

The short program included an introduction by Associate Librarian Joanna Siapno, a dramatic reading by the Harlequin Theater Guild, and a brief speech by Gallaga himself.

“Why DLSU library? This is my way of giving back to my source. My source of inspiration, my source of passion,” says Gallaga, commenting on why he chose to turn a great number of his collections to De La Salle University.

After completing his elementary and high school education at De La Salle University, Peque Gallaga finished commerce and liberal arts at DLSU’s Bacolod Campus. In 1973, he broke into the film industry with his production design work for Eddie Romero’s Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?

Throughout Gallaga’s four decades in the film industry since then, he has worked as a director, screenwriter, production designer, producer and actor. His filmography includes Oro, Plata, Mata (1982), City After Dark (1980), Pinoy Blonde (2005) and Batang X (1995).

The signing of a memorandum of agreement was done in the presence of Peque Gallaga, Br. Bernard Oca FSC, Vice Chancellor for Lasallian Mission, and Dr. Dominador Bombongan Jr., Dean of College of Liberal Arts. The program ended with Br. Bernard Oca giving response to the generosity of Peque Gallaga.

“This is just the beginning,” states Clodualdo del Mundo, Jr., whose work is also included in the collection. Fellow contributor Lore Reyes hopes that “students will see the hard work that making a good movie entails.”

Also in attendance was Jo Macasa, assistant director to Gallaga. Of the collection, she shares, “You can see the breakdown, the budget, the storyboards, the shotlists… makikita niyo lahat (you can see everything). So I think it’s going to be a crash course in filmmaking with Peque Gallaga.”
