Ever since that twerking act by Miley Cyrus during the MTV Video Music Awards 2013, bashers, detractors, admirers and even non-music lovers have been talking about the child star, with discussion spanning from the songs, down to her personality, and even morality. Thing here is, she’s a music icon with the goal of selling her albums to make a living, so let’s take a look at her fourth album named Bangerz, where everyone’s eyes are set on ever since that twerking.
Miley tries to do a lot of things in Bangerz, and for the most part, succeeds. Without forgetting about her roots dating back to her Hannah Montana days, she is still very capable of providing a powerful song with a simple beat. The album starts off with Adore You, a song that stands out by not standing out. Not to be mistaken for a Miley song of old because of its absence of a faster BPM and multiple layers of beats and synths, this song is a great choice with which to begin her album. It serves as a reminder that when stripped down of other musical elements, Cyrus’ voice will shine in the simplicity.
Save for her image, Miley can’t seem to find her unique voice in terms of expression, not sound. Songs like #GetItRight and Hands in the Air seem closer to a Bruno Mars and Rihanna sound respectively. Even during the moments when she is rapping with the fullness of her voice, shades of Nicki Minaj can be heard. This shows her range, which is very welcoming since at the young age of 20, she is in no rush nor does she have any desire to typecast herself.
Mike Will Made It not only succeeds in having the unofficial best name for a producer but does a wonderful job in helping Cyrus showcase her identity through its instrumentals. Cyrus’ vibrant personality is evident in the fun beats and playful lyrics with songs like SMS (BANGERZ) and We Can’t Stop. Obviously a party person’s favorite, the song We Can’t Stop not only makes you sing it anywhere and everywhere, but it also voices out one’s preference in what he or she wants to do with his or her life. Miley, herself, has gotten into this new image but she’s definitely enjoying it.
Breaking all kinds of barriers (literally), Wrecking Ball is a controversial song because of how aggravating the lyrics are. The lines, “you wreck me”, plus her tears-everywhere-with-some-sort-of-snot face in the music video without the ball, add to that the licking of a sledgehammer, and you get carried away by the excruciating pain and find yourself in a Eureka moment thinking, “Hey, her heart was broken, give her a break.” Many people say that the song is about her ex-fiance Liam Hemsworth who allegedly left her after a one-year engagement. However, it seems that that is not the case because the song tells about someone who has fallen in love with someone who does not reciprocate that love. And because love has taken her full-on with nothing in return, this then led to destruction, waste…heartbreak!
4X4 and #GETITRIGHT are the two catchy songs that depict a carefree feeling, an untroubled soul, and may become a part of your feel good playlist. Meanwhile, there is My Darlin’, a special rendition of Ben King’s Stand By Me, performed by Miley together with Future, and it has this modern twist of electronic beats and rhythm. Nonetheless, the sincerity of the song still touches someone’s heart.
Love Money Party can be associated with the other two mentioned feel good songs because of its catchy beat, and although it seems more noisy than the others, this tune is best suitable for street dance performances.
In an interview for MTV, Miley hoped that her fans would notice what she called “complete arc”, from where she was and where she is now. If you have heard of the current No. 1 album in 70 countries, you will find it very straightforward and a direct shot to the heart, and whether you listen to a fun song or one of the more painful ones, you will find it packed with some collaboration with Britney Spears, Nelly, Future and French Montana.
