Three students from the University are part of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) in the National Capital Region (NCR) as announced last May 5. Jose Miguel Moreno, Justin Sucgang, and Ira Gayll Zamudio were accepted into the prestigious awards circle after a rigorous screening process among the best in academics, leadership, and social responsibility.

Each year since the early 1960s, ten students in the tertiary level are lauded with the award. This year, three students from De La Salle University placed among the ten awardees. This year’s search, themed “Choose to be a hero everyday,” centers in on everyday heroism, anchored in TOSP’s mission to seek for young and dedicated Filipinos who will serve as role models to their peers in nation building.

Lasallian students Moreno, Sucgang, and Zamudio were picked from 20 finalists who were put under a 3-day formation program. This year, 46 students from 21 different schools around the NCR, including University of the Philippines – Diliman and Ateneo de Manila University, among others, were nominated for the award.

Moreno, one of the Lasallian awardees, expresses the need for the Filipino youth to never stop believing in their dreams for the Philippines. He calls for his fellow youth to choose to respond to the call for nation building.

Moreno was last academic year’s University Student Government President. Meanwhile, Zamudio is a double-major student of Economics and Accountancy, and a member of the La Salle Debate Society. Sucgang, on the other hand, is from the pioneer batch of DLSU’s College of Law and an appointed member of the country’s Legal Education Board. Sucgang also took his undergraduate studies at DLSU.

The TOSP awards program is considered the most distinguished award of its kind. The award gives honor and prestige to outstanding students who both excell academically and who possess a deep sense of social responsibility. The nomination process is open to bona fide graduating students without failing grades. Nominees per region are then screened to qualify for the nationwide search.

The 10 finalists for TOSP-NCR will then go under another screening with the rest of the finalists from other regions in the Philippines for the nationwide search.

In 2012, three out of the ten TOSP nationwide finalists hailed from DLSU.
