Media practitioners recognized in 11th Lasallian Scholarum Awards

De La Salle University, through the Office for Strategic Communications (STRATCOM), held the Lasallian Scholarum Awards last September 1, at Makati Shangri-La Hotel. Now on its 11th year, the event aims to recognize outstanding media coverage of youth and educational stories.KBP_0693

Nominations for the seven categories, spanning from print, online, and television feature stories that tackle d issues on youth and education published or aired in the past year, were submitted to the STRATCOM. A third party firm gathered all entries submitted and a list of finalists was then produced. The winners were chosen from 10 finalists per category out of hundreds of nominations.

The works of the finalists were screened by an esteemed group of judges. Senator Juan Edgardo Angara, former Congresswoman Lorna Verano, former Executive Director of Rock Ed Philippines and acclaimed screenwriter and director Jose Lorenzo “Pepe” Diokno, DLSU University Student Government (USG) President Carlo Innocencio, and STRATCOM Executive Director Jose Mari Magpayo were the members of this year’s board of judges.

For the Outstanding Published Feature Article on Youth and Education in a School Organ, Elise Apilado, Jan Fredrick Cruz, and KD Montenegro of Ateneo de Manila University’s The Guidon won for their article entitled Struggling for words: Adjusting to basic education’s new language policy.

No happy campers, a photograph by Nino Jesus Orbeta from the Philippine Daily Inquirer won Outstanding Published Photograph on Youth and Education, while the feature article Education in Asia: A region at risk? by Curtis S. Chin and Jose Collazo, also from the Philippine Daily Inquirer, won Outstanding Published Feature Article on Youth and Education in a Nationally-circulated Publication.

Meanwhile, Michael Tan won Outstanding Published Column Article on Youth and Education for his column in the Philippine Daily Inquirer titled Child rights and WCST.

Make gov’t accountable for climate change, commissioner tells youth, an article by Anna Valmero published in GMA News Online, won Online Feature Story for Youth and Education. On the other hand, the Production Team of Reel Time from GMA News TV won Outstanding Televised Feature Story on Youth and Education for their documentary Alamat ni Dunkgoy.

Lastly, Ready to race by Angelo Garcia from the Manila Bulletin won the grand prize for Outstanding Feature Story on De La Salle University.

The winners from student media received a plaque and a P15,000 cash prize. The winners from professional media outlets, meanwhile, were given P25,000, with the exception of the grand prize winner who received P40,000. All of the winners from professional media were also given a metal sculpture crafted by renowned artist Daniel dela Cruz.
