UAAP: Lady Spikers race past NU in straight sets

After a shaky start to the first set which saw the NU Lady Bulldogs race to an 8-3 lead, the DLSU Lady Spikers recovered and flashed their dominant form en route to an easy win in straight sets, 25-22, 25-12, 25-15, earlier today at the San Juan Arena.

The win marks the second for the Lady Spikers in as many outings in UAAP Season 77 as they continue on their quest to bounce back from last year’s runner-up finish after winning three consecutive titles in the years prior.image

UAAP Season 75 co-MVP and team captain Ara Galang led the way for La Salle with 15 points including five service aces. Sophomore Kim Dy, who played sparingly last season, also made her presence felt, finishing with a career-best 10 points.

Meanwhile, NU was buoyed by the 6’4 Jaja Santiago who had 10 points. However, NU was unable to keep up to DLSU due to several errors which hindered them from gaining any form of momentum during the contest. NU committed 27 errors compared to just 16 for La Salle.

After NU’s quick start to the first set, La Salle quickly rallied, tying the score at eight. Both teams went back-and-forth until Galang and Desiree Cheng kickstarted a run for DLSU that propelled them to a 16-12 lead entering the second technical timeout of the set. NU would remain close, trailing by just two, 22-20, towards the end of the set. However, La Salle would seal the set after Mika Reyes scored off a block to enter set point then a service error from NU’s Santiago sealed the opening set for the Lady Spikers.

The second set was a different story as the Lady Spikers raced out of the gates, capitalizing on several errors from NU. DLSU slowly built its lead and eventually finished the second set with a 13 point lead, 25-12.

The third set followed the same script as the second, with DLSU racing out to an early lead and NU committing a wide array of errors. The Lady Spikers took the third set, 25-15, keeping NU winless so far this season.

Up next for DLSU are the formidable UST Tigresses whom they will face on Sunday, November 30, at 2 pm in the San Juan Arena.
