PCCL: Green Archers bow to SBC, settle for second place

The DLSU Green Archers finish at second place after faltering to the San Beda Red Lions in the second game of the PCCL Finals, 73-66. San Beda came back late in the fourth quarter, taking away the championship from the Green-and-White.

The Most Valuable Player for the PCCL, Oladie Adeogun had an efficient game, registering 19 points on six of seven shooting. Mythical Five selection Jeron Teng on the distaff, posted a game-high 25 points along with four assists, shooting three of seven from the three-point line. Rookie big man Prince Rivero contributed 11 points and eight rebounds in just 26 minutes of play.

It was a sluggish start for both teams as neither team could rotate the ball in the half court. Ola Adeogun lit up the scoreboards, scoring 9 of his 19 points in the first period alone. Jeron Teng lifted the Green Archers with his seven quarter points including one three-pointer.
The scoring went toe-to-toe as La Salle’s fast break points were immediately matched by the Red Lions. La Salle started to struggle with their shots in the closing minutes, enabling SBC to take the lead. The quarter ended with a score of 16-15 in favor of San Beda.

However the Green Archers managed to end up on top by the end of the second period with a score of 33-31 at halftime. Turnovers were still the main problem for DLSU coming into the second, with nine of them in the half alone. San Beda capitalized and made inside shots, while dominating the offensive boards for second chance points.

Midway through the second quarter, back-to-back three pointers by Jeron Teng and Kib Montalbo catapulted them back to the lead. Adeogun was then tagged with his third foul, causing him to miss the rest of the second quarter and some moments in the third.

The Taft-based squad started aggressively in the third period, running the floor on any available opportunity. Benoit Mbala, who was struggling in the first half, finally scored his first basket as he slams the ball back home off a missed lay-up. Roldan Sara of San Beda also came alive in the third period, scoring his first five points in the game.

The teams then traded baskets for the majority of the quarter with SBC getting the better half of the deal, scoring off La Salle’s six third quarter turnovers. Sara drained a three pointer to tie the game with a minute left in the quarter, but Teng denied to be outdone as he also banked a triple with just a few seconds remaining. DLSU was still on top at the end of three quarters, 50-47.

San Beda regained command after a three-pointer by Amer. The Rivero-Mbala tandem provided the scoring for La Salle, combining for 12 points in the fourth. However, the Red Lions would make a run in the last five minutes of the game, scoring seven unanswered points.

The Green Archers would then hit a dry spell missing nine straight baskets, which allowed SBC to drift away. DLSU played the fouling game, as they struggled to convert. SBC’s Sara capped off the game with two free-throws to put any chance of a comeback away from La Salle.
