In what seemed to be one of their closest matches in the season thus far, the DLSU Lady Spikers were able to escape the FEU Lady Tamaraws in four sets, 25-16, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, earlier today at The Arena in San Juan.
The victory solidifies La Salle’s status as a legitimate contender in the league, as they remain atop the standings, with an unscathed record of 5-0. Alongside the defending champions, the ADMU Lady Eagles, the Lady Spikers are still undefeated and have yet to drop a match.
It was another all-around game for La Salle team captain Ara Galang as she notched 22 points, with 19 attacks and two blocks. However, it was Mika Reyes who lifted the Lady Spikers in the endgame, as she scored two straight points to close the tightly-contested fourth and final set in favor of DLSU. Reyes was able to register a total of 17 points, seven of which came from the blocking department and two came from her service aces.
Meanwhile, the FEU Lady Tamaraws have dropped their third consecutive match, despite the valiant efforts of Bernadeth Pons who led the squad with 22 points.
In what began as a lopsided affair in favor of the Lady Spikers in the first set, which ended at 25-16, FEU relied on floor spacing adjustments as they were able to keep at pace with La Salle in the second set. Although FEU encountered difficulty in breaking through La Salle’s defense early in the set, the Lady Tamaraws took advantage of La Salle’s many errors. Sfter trailing by as much as nine, FEU was able to finally grab a taste of the lead at 11-10. The Lady Tamaraws sustained the momentum, as La Salle was unable to come back, closing the second set at 25-21 in favor of FEU.

It was another tug-of-war in the third set, as both squads fought to secure the lead. It was La Salle who prevailed, though, as they were able to cut down their errors and ignite several offensive rallies throughout the set. With well-timed shots by Galang, Reyes, and Desiree Cheng, the Lady Spikers held on to close the third set to their advantage, 25-23
Just like the third set, the fourth set saw La Salle and FEU in a very close fight once again. However, the Lady Spikers seemingly dictated the offensive tempo and La Salle was able to hold on to their lead, despite FEU’s efforts to stage a comeback. With FEU within striking distance during the late moments of the set, Reyes notched the game’s most important back-to-back points as she sealed the match for DLSU, 25-22.
Next up for the Lady Spikers are the still win-less UE Lady Warriors, whom they will face on January 4, 2015 at The Arena in San Juan.
